What Does It Mean?

07/21/2015 11:03 PM

I have inherited a ring that dates from the 40's or 50's. It has hallmark and makers mark and is stamped R4 - C17. Can anybody guess what R4 - C17 might mean?

Wow, you responded to my post yesterday. Must be some sort of record .

Thanks for the link. The ring does have hallmarks that i am not concerned with. The "R4 - C17" is stamped in a font that looks exactly like what is seen on this post. Minus the exclamation marks.

Is it a bible ref? Tunes from a Juke box? All guesses gratefully received.

Thanks SE. No stones. More like a wedding ring. Unusual for the day it has an engraved pattern around the outside. Australia in the 40's and 50's was quite conservative and wedding rings were usually plain and small.

GA... likely it... although C is Carat, not Karat so a measure of purity rather than mass.

That sounds like a possibility. My dad was a mason and indeed it may have had meaning to him. Can you expand or offer any more detail?

If the Free Masons are to rule the world as suggested and they have been at it for about 1500 years and have not been successful then I for one am not too worried. They had better be worried if this is their quest they are damn well not ready for the result.

I'll be the devils advocate on this one and say that if their heads actually did want something like that (of course I'm not implying they do, I just hate concepts that promote cryptic behaviour for no obvious reasons, even justified as "defence" for their perceived ethical supremacy). So now. If they did, available tooling these days is significantly more effective than... 1500 years ago. (LOL) Now on the ring, since previous owner was actually a mason, (how could I know that?) I was probably spot on, especially if the ring logo resembles anything like:

S.M.

First thoughts were upgrade version of R2-D2 and then found this http://www.cakecentral.com/gallery/i/1989373/r4-c17 but probably the wrong timeframe.

The other guess is that it's a catalogue reference for the maker andyou have got one of the display samples.

Is this winter colder than usual for you? We got our first snow in 40 years last week!!

First snow in 40 years in some parts mate not everywhere.

I have worked in the snow in Oz and it was a lot less than 40 years ago.

But yeah, lots of pretty snow at lower altitudes this year. Very pretty to look at, fun to play in but a total prick to work in or drive through.

This winter has been warm and dry for us in Perth. Max of 17C to 21C min above 4C. No snow anywhere. This next weekend is the Avon Descent, billed as the worlds' longest white water race. I live near the 'river' and and i can tell you there will be a lot of walking if it doesn't rain this coming week.

This is an old pic but it looks this today.

Yep, the snow was around 50km away from here. We haven't got below 4C here also. Daytime temps around the same as you 17C to 21C. 30km the othe way and the beach hasn't seen below 10C with daytimes around 23C and this is midwinter!!

More rain so far this year than last two combined.

Love the flat country!!

Yes, you may. Depth of field is not good with poor light and phone camera. The motif is a chain. The double ring inside has the number 375 inside it.

I hope this helps.

Nice try Jim.

Just enough detail to tell you that this is not a catalogue/common/mass produced piece but was a bespoke hand fabricated ring. Ergo those markings mean something significant.

Ring inside a ring with articulation is not a simple build and the chain motif shows clear handwork markings.

This is a beautiful piece.

Can you borrow a more capable camera to give us all a clear look at all the hallmarkings.

(Mrs Wal is a jewelery smith...I notice things along the way, maybe something in her library..)

I'd take your beautiful ring to a non-chain jeweler or an antiques dealer with some knowledge of jewelery (or to Antiques Roadshow, if it's coming to a place near you any time soon). I had a similar quest with my wedding ring, which was originally my great-grandmother's ring.

The answers you're getting here are a lot more interesting than what a jeweler will tell you .

.

I concurr. I really was hoping for an answer, and given the depth and wide spread, both geographically and metaphorically, knowledge of the people here i half expected one. But the upside to this forum is that some fun can be had along the way even if the answer is unknowable.

He came to Australia from Russia when he was 4 yrs old, and she came from Canada when she was 17....It's the plot of land map coordinates he gave her on their wedding day.....It's the volume and page of the public record that holds proof of their marriage....It's the number of drinks they had to get her to agree to marry him....Rum 4 Cocktails 17.....It's the burial plot where he buried his first wife.....It's the score of the game they met at....It's her ring size and dress size.....It's her dress size and her shoe size....It's how much money they had when they got married, 4 Rubles and 17 Canadian dollars....It's the gold claim he has....

R4 = Typically, the R means rolled... where the precious metal component is rolled around a core of less precious base. Not sure what the '4' mean though... maybe thickness of the rolled material... 4mm = 0.157" thick... looking at your piece, does this make sense?

Edit: R can also be size... Size R. And the 4 could mean total mass... 4 grams. Does it weight about 4 grams?

C17 = 17 Carat. Throughout the industry there are numerous ways to reference:

  • karat (Kt.)
  • carat (Ct.)
  • Karat (K)
  • Carat (C)

One equals mass that other reference purity; not sure of the subtilites between upper and lower case or Kt. vs. K. In your case the 17C may represent purity of the fine metal component. But 17 is an odd number... normally you'd see 14 or 18 when in that range.

Again... the above is atypical of normal markings so I may be full of CR4P.

The first thing that came to mind is R4 is a resistor and C17 is a capacitor. These symbols are printed on circuit boards, but I'm sure it has nothing to do with wedding bands. I have a wedding bad similar to that one with a simple motif, but no symbols.

It could be some sort of catalog identification system. The only thing that negates that theory is the size of the symbols. They are too prominent to be for identification.
