Screw Compressor Oil Problem

07/23/2015 2:35 AM

Please kindly advice the solution . At the screw compressor , oil always reduce . There is no overheating. Temperature less than 100 celcius degrees. The oil separator had change with new original part but the problem still coming. Also there is no leak of oil at the outside of compressor parts.

What is the cause and how to solve this problem.

Thank You.

If the oil separator includes a coalescing element, it may be damaged or otherwise leaking by, with oil going into the compressor discharge stream.

Excessive oil consumption
  1. Over filled sump
  2. Broken oil line
  3. Plugged oil return line
  4. Damaged or dirty separator
  5. Excessive unloaded compressor run time
  1. Check sump for proper oil level
  2. Check all lines for cracks
  3. Replace separator
  4. Add a timer to the system

That's just a few to start with

What fluid are you compressing with this compressor? As always, the more information you provide the better we might be able to help you.

One thing you won't find in the trouble shooting guide - check for loosened filters. I just recently had that problem causing very slow oil leakage. Just the vibration of operation may shake them loose. I have added this as a periodic check to the PM schedule,

Check if your oil is in the compressed air.

If there is no oil leaking on the outside it will leak to the inside.

How much oil can you tolerate in your compressed air? How old the compressor?

Maybe time for some replacement.

I had use this compressor since 2003 with two times of general overhaul . The type is Atlas copco GA 11. I had change the oil, oil filter, air filter and oil separator by periodic .

Atlas Copco will be happy to discuss replacement details.

Why where there general overhauls? What happend? What is there on this compressor that we do not know or see?

Following the regular maintenance schedule will not prevent the system to fail. But it should make trouble shouting easier.

Is this water cooled as was asked before?

How many hours on the unit. They do wear out eventually. I have been running a GD 30HP since 2000, but only 1 shift operation so relatively low hours- only 35,000.

Is the compressor air cooled or water cooled? If it is water cooled there is a possibility that the oil cooling heat exchanger is leaking oil into the cooling water.

Bearing wear and/or bearing seal failure allowing oil to enter the air stream.

This is very common on screw type air compressors.

Does the compressor utilize seal air for shaft seal over-pressurization counter measures during startup and/or run?

If so; Is the seal air system functioning correctly? Are all of the seal air components clean and free of leaks? Is the seal air pressure correct? Is the seal air clean and dry?

If all the above is ok I would contact the Atlas COPCO field service group and get help in diagnosing the problem.

Screw compressors always use a bit of oil. It's in their design.

If it's being ran at moderate loads in a high run time application having to add oil every 100 - 200 running hours is fairly normal.

There are dry compressors (with timing gears) which should not consume any oil along with compressed flow...

Dear Mr.aska,

Going by your information, it appears that the oil is getting mixed with the compressed material. either through the bearings.

Pl. check for the Breather if used in the system.

Had that problem with a Kaeser. Turned out to be the combo air/oil cooler leaking between the oil and air sides internally. Paint shop had problems with oil in the compressed air big time!
