Cold start: Started at ambient temperature.

Hot start: Started at operating temperature.

  1. Cold start - When a motor is started in a refrigerator!
  2. Hot start - When a motor is started in an oven!

Reply #1 is a GA. To add a little, close-succession starts also make a hot-start condition, as also could higher than normal ambient temperatures. There are various control strategies to prevent that, too many to describe briefly.
