Forum Going Downhill

08/12/2015 4:18 PM

This forum appears to be going downhill. Topics are being posted that have nothing remotely to do with engineering; (ie: suction cups). Although they may be of concern to some, it has nothing to do with engineering. Some of us have been critical about "homework assignment" questions on this forum and it appears that has been solved. We need to get back to engineering and questions related to it. This forum can provide some very useful information for all to learn from. Don't waste our time or your own time posting "nonsense" questions. Maybe we need a "coffee lounge" section for such non-engineering banter.

I usually skip any questions that appear to be "nonsense" and won't waste my valuable time on them. This post is an exception to that rule.

It appears we are indeed experiencing the evolution process at work and I fear the competent engineer will soon become extinct.

Yes,

Some posts are drivel and some are very specific and to tell you the truth, over my head. In those posts that are beyond my education, I read them and learn a little something.

And there are times where a post can evolve into something where the OP never thought it would go.

Been there!

I believe that if someone posts an authentic question and responds with answers to the other posts, then I think it is a valid question. Also, I believe that some of the conversations that we have here relate to social or human engineering. What I'm trying to say is that if you are unable to communicate (ask a question and reply) an issue clearly then you are doomed to failure.

Sometimes I feel like I'm a teacher correcting a third grade math paper but it's really a college engineering student. If they cannot relay their thoughts and converse with other HIGH LEVEL engineers, they are doomed.

While I totally agree that the quality of questions, and the perceived intelligence of questioners may be debatable, I have to disagree with your assessment of Suction Cup Usage as being a non-engineering subject.

sanandam77, has a dilemma involving moving a long slender load using a vehicle not intended for such use. He has proposed a possible solution involving several aspects. One. suction cups. There are many engineering material implications here. The other a mirror attached to a small vehicle. Strength of materials, yield strengths etc.

While many details remain to be learned there are engineering solutions suggested as alternatives by members.

Now take Atomic Transmutation, offered by Kulas. This thread is an insult to the intelligence of any engineer as it is pure rubbish, offered only for the amusement of the person who posted it. It is a nuisance and has no value, as are most of his threads.

Given the choice, I prefer the suction cup questions over the mutation questions all day long.

Suction cup? .....I disagree.

Engineering can be divided into (2) categories.

1.) theoretical (book work)

2.) practical (use for applications)

Just because one does not see the value, does not mean it has nothing to do with engineering.

And if I recall, what member had a question/post something about running an underground air line for a air compressor.

Regarding this forum...

It is in essence a dynamic process, where the nature of its output (what we perhaps perceive as its "quality") is directly related to the quality of all of its various input elements.

One good thing... we all now have no problem getting a supplier of male enhancement drugs and other such tools (pun intended).

IMHO... It will come back.
