08/16/2015 12:53 AM

Hi engineers,i just want to thank you for the advice you gave me on my project that I posted last year.I successfully finished the project, with all the controlling devices fixed on the machines as I wanted, as it was supposed to be.Now the client is happy. He now wants me to work with his team but, my original company wants me also. How best can I seve these two masters without inconviniencing the quality of work and overstraining myself.

One possible recipe is to remain a full-time employee of one of these entities, but doing occasional part-time consultation with the other. (If permitted by the various contracts.) Another choice is tell your satisfied client that you are happy to serve further, but only through your present employer, with whom you may still have contractual obligations, as well as loyalties.

set up your own consultancy with the two companies becoming 'clients' you can then assist with both and word of mouth may secure you an increasing client database.

Ask your present employer what it may be worth to introduce a new client, and what commission you may expect.

Which job setting best fits: your skillset, your interests, your ability to expand and grow to where you want to go in the field, etc.?

Make a list of pros and cons of the different scenarios that have already been suggested by others on the Post. John Maxwell said in "Talent Is Never Enough", "if you ever want to reach your potential, you can't stay where you are". We don't live in a static environment and we always need to be growing. Sometimes that may take place in the work where we are but we keep reading, listening to great audios and gaining new experiences or we may choose to move to a new setting where we learn more because of the new people we're around or the setting for new experiences.

It needs careful handling, because it depends upon the nature of the Contract of Employment with the present employer and the terms and conditions therein, which cannot be seen from here. It is always best to secure an offer from the prospect before ever mentioning it and handing in one's notice with the present employer. Stealth is the watchword!

Oh, and NEVER accept the counter-offer from the present employer.

For sure. "Never burn a bridge" as Zig Ziglar would say. You never know who you may get, or have, to work with in the future.

Indeed. It is always best to say that one is disconnecting for the time being in the resignation letter, mentioning also that nothing is standing in the way of reconnection in the future should both parties so desire.

Ordinarily that is best. I once worked two seven-year stints for the same employer, separated by a seven-year gig with another. On the other hand, some jobs are so rotten that I would pluck chickens first before going back.
