Deep Water Electronic Communication

08/27/2015 2:40 AM

Hello forum., what is the best way of electronic communication in deep waters to land. My colleague and I, is interested to develop Tsunami sensors and public address system.

I am glad if you could help.

Why is it not possible to use electromagnetic wave on deep water?

Check out ELF (extra low frequency) communication. Or hire some whales?

Dolphins. They eat less.

Water absorbs electromagnetic waves except for very low frequencies. The most economical method of communication is probably a cable from the bottom to a floating buoy and radio (or satellite) link from there.

Since lives are at risk, do not attempt to reinvent the wheel, the DART paper that Rixter listed provides some insight into the years of research and level of sophistication required to produce such a system. The answer to your deep water communication question will be found in some of the references at the end of the paper, along with a Google search on ELF (Extremely Low Frequency) communications.

As two others have pointed out, it is possible to use electromagnetic waves in deep salt water, but only if they have Extremely Low Frequency, which means Extremely long wavelength. It may be worthwhile to point out that in order to produce ELF waves, a very long antenna is required, and only extremely low data rates are possible.

Thus a cable, either to the surface or to the shore, is your only real option.

You might want to read through the following link, which covers many of the points already raised, but in more detail.
