Storage Tank Heater, Thermostat

08/27/2015 3:24 AM

I have a storage tank heater of 10 KW/415V. Recently, the thermostat of the heater started malfunctioning and so I opened to check it. The thermostat has capillary bulbs and has two set points. 90 degrees is a pre set point. It is also a 3 phase thermostat. As far as i know, with more than 10 Amps current, thermostats needs to be connected with a contactor but this heater doesnot seem to have any. Please suggest me a suitable replacement and letme know where in India can i find the same.( Please note, I donot know the name of the company who supplied the heater but the thermostat is from Cotherm).

Most water heater thermostats I know of do not involve a contactor; the ampere rating of the thermostat is already sufficient. This appears to be a 3-phase thermostat--does it have a current rating stamped on it? It might be "Contherm" rather than "Cotherm".

The rating says 16 A- 230 V.

Then I presume the elements are wired in star, which gives 230 volts on each phase to neutral. I.e., your setup looks correct. I don't know of local sources for a replacement thermostat.

http://www.cotherm.com/

That cream colored box is the contactor.

Looks like the temperature control from which they call a dishwater heater.

I stripped mine out and used a digital temperature control ,a solid state contactor for control and a mechanical contactor for on/off.

Google can find suppliers of replacement 3-phase thermostats anywhere in the universe, not just India. Highly recommended.
