Lubricant Life

11/09/2015 1:07 AM

In Dammam Saudi Arabia, YOU ONE of Korea has executed a 600 bed Hospital project before Gulf war. But the time of finishing they went out of Kingdom due to war. The HVAC with Reciprocating chillers of 13 X 320 TR was completely installed, flushed and test run was laying over 15 years without use in open weather exposed yard. After the war the original firm demanded US $ 600 Million to recommission the entire hospital including the HVAC system mentioned above. But Govt did not agree and awarded the contract to a locall firm after another 5 years for several million $ more as the original firm has gone bankrupt. When i joined the new firm to recommission the HVAC system i recommended the replacement of compressor lubricants. I explained to that the oil has chemically disintegrated and under gone fractional distillation due to weather has deposited wax at the bottom and oil above. But a fresher who was HOD recommended not to replace the oil as it has not changed physically or chemically. My submittal of quotation from oil dealers for oil with expiry date and not expiry date forced the management to accept my view. I changed the lubricant and recommissioned the system. What would have happened if the lubricant was not replaced and run with the old oil?

As it did not happen, no-one, particularly in this forum, can say with any level of certainty. The possibilities range from:

  • Nothing untoward, to
  • Catastrophic and terminal self-disassembly.

As far as I know, oils in sealed refrigerant systems have an indefinite lifetime. It is principally exposure to atmosphere that can degrade oils. A possible approach in your circumstance would have been to analyze an oil sample from each unit.

Each chiller had 4 compressors of 80 TR each and all the chillers gas has leaked out due to brittle and perished rubber glands of valves and diaphragms of the Solenoid valves. The fresher HOD was already there before i joined. I had to teach them the fundamentals.

In that case, you were right to change the oil. My sympathies on the loss of refrigerant, as well as the deterioration of elastomers.

Padmanabhan Iyer. Score 1.
Fresher who was HOD. Score 0.
If Fresher was Head of your Department, your score just became -5.

You should have change not only the compressor lubricant might as well, the oil filters. Oil degrades per exposure to the atmosphere and also moisture if LP lines has history of leaks. Organic acids formed when moisture is around the line and this will inhibit corrosion and itself will form a sludge and constrict the line and filters the worst case. It would also be best to have a regular routine testing of oil.

Have you tested the old oil in lab? if yes, what was the result.
