Electrons Communicating

01/18/2016 4:41 PM

if you take two electrons and vibrate both at the same frequency they will communicate even when separated by several light years. so are they communicating at a rate faster than the speed of light?

No, because when your arms are several light years long and the brain is in the middle, when you vibrate them with your hands, the signals take equally long to get to the electrons, therefore they communicate with many years of delay. They're still communicating, they just have to wait a while for the response.

It's called Quantum entanglement and it is quite exciting (especially in the fields of communications and cryptography)

Quantum entanglement is a little more complicated than "electron vibration" but entangled particles theoretically, yes....but has yet to be proven...

That was going to be my question: Who's done the practical work to check this?

Alain Aspect, perhaps.

You're thinking of quantum entanglement. It's doesn't work for just any two electrons. It works when two electrons are initially paired with (say) complementary spin, then separated by a large distance with no interactions occurring during the process of separation. Then a test of the spin of one electron will instantaneously determine the spin of the second electron. Yes, this occurs 'faster than the speed of light', but according to the current standard model of quantum theory this cannot be used to communicate information.

If one makes a false initial premise can one now violate any other law? Only in your dreams.

If you have two electrons that are entangled and they are separated by a large distance's without anything affecting either electron, then if you measure the spin of one of the electrons at point A, you will get some completely random value. If you measure the spin of the other electron at point B, it will be correlated with the spin of the electron at point A. But at point A you have no control so you have no way to control the measurement at point B.

In a way, it's like one person reading a NY Times newspaper in Hong Kong and another person reading the same sentence in London. It's the same information but no communication takes place between the two. The only difference (according to Bell's inequality) is that with quantum mechanics there is no newspaper! It just happens.

Our AP said nothing about these electrons being a quantum state entanglement pair. They're just being vibrated somehow (mechanically?) at the same frequency.

uantum entanglement sounds complex and intimidating but at a rudimentary level entanglement is just the way subatomic particles communicate with each other.

Exactly, the electrons are entangled, so their states are linked, but you cannon communicate through them, you can only measure the state, but you won't know what it is until you measure it, and you won't know if you measured 'first' or 'second.'

Also, if you try to 'force' the electron into a specific state, to try and communicate along the 'quantum link,' you break entanglement and now the electrons states are completely independent of each other.

Re: Electrons Communicating

No, there is no instant communication. As usbport said (post#4) this happens only in a specific situation (entanglement). In this case, it is supposed that the (initially "coupled") pair of electrons behave like a "unity" (a "unified system" or "one particle" if you like), even they are separated by a very large distance. In Quantum theory, this is called "non locality". And, of course, you can't use it in order to transfer information.

This is a ridiculous question to begin with.

Some no-name dork makes a stupid statement and off we go.

Who says two electrons will communicate???

According to Stephen Hawkins knowledge does travel faster than light.

The prophecy of yours that two electrons vibrating at same frequency can communicate when they are separated by several light years is itself is not true. Then communication faster than light doesnot come into picture
