Transparent Conductive Spray Coating

03/22/2016 6:37 AM

I have an object made with a 3D printer with classic plastic PLA, I want to painting it (with several colors) and then add a transparent coating to make my object conductive. Does anyone here have any experience with transparent conductive spray coating ?

It would be quicker to contact the paint manufacturers directly.

You can get a silver rich conductive paint but it isn't clear.

I don't think any conductive coating will be clear as they all need conductive particles. You might consider ITO coating (as used on touch screens etc.) but that is applied by deposition, not spraying.

Thank you for your feedbacks. That's the thing, i'm looking for a transparent coating solution to made my color painted object conductive. If it's not "clear" enough that won't work. I heard about this material but i'm not sure if it's the right solution.

Your 'this material' link doesn't work.

I think Nigh is correct. The only clear conductive material I am aware of is ITO (indium tin oxide).

It is available as a layer deposited on a clear PET film. Perhaps there is a way you can attach this film over your painted surface.

Sorry about my previous link, let's try with this one Transparent conductive and anti-static paint

I will consider the ITO coating, for now I just don't know how to apply it on my object with its small dimensions (h:55mm, w:30mm)

We have ITO coating applied to much smaller objects, from memory down to about 5x8x2mm.

I noticed the application methods:

Purring method, spraying

method and shaving method.

I refuse to paint anything with a technique that involves using a cat for a paint brush. That will have animal rights activists snarling, not purring. As to the shaving method, that would depend on whom is being being shaved, and where.

If you shave the cat it won't work at all.

Define, "conductive". Until you define the level of conductivity required everyone is just wasting time.

Soap, compounded into plastics renders the surface "conductive" enough to allow small electrostatic charges to bleed off the package. Not very conductive, but good enough, as long as there is sufficient moisture in the air to condense on the surface.

If you want to conduct a real electrical charge on the surface, you may have a problem.

Quite true, 'conductive' is too general... The SI unit of electrical resistance is the ohm (Ω), while electrical conductance is measured in siemens (S)...If we are dealing with static electricity, then the plastic material itself may fill the requirement...

"Plastics are classified as insulating materials having typical surface resistivities of 1016 - 1017 ohms/sq. The electrically conductive plastics commercially available today are composite materials of electrically insulating base resins and electrically conductive fillers or reinforcing agents. Electrical conductivity is achieved via a conductive network of particles or fibers. For electrically conductive plastics, three different conductivity ranges are defined:

  • Dissipative Composites
  • Conductive Composites
  • ESD shielding Composites

Thank you Nigh, lyn, SolarEagle. You're right, I need to figure out what resistance and conductance I need exactly. What I try to do is to conduct the body electricity through my object so it will be identified by a capacitive screen like a touchpen for tablets (ipad, android, etc).

I checked the properties of a product that is near of what I want in term of conductivity : conductive ABS. I find some data about its conductive properties :

  • Anti-Static & Static Dissipative
  • Electrically conductive; 10^3~5 Ω (1000 Ohm/cm)

You might also consider the frequency of the conductivity At x-ray wavelengths, almost any coating will be conductive.

The ABS you mentioned has a similar conductivity range as the conductive purr paint from China with ITO in it.

Capacitive touch lamps use plastic switches so maybe just try your object first before spending a lot of time and money on coatings. Or perhaps your object could have a touch switch built in, as a hat, for example.

I know of no transparent paint, but you might consider static dissipating wax such as that use in anti-static clean rooms.

If you only need a static type eliminator we used an anticonductive spray called StatNull on the insides panel meters covers when we modified them.

I still have a large spray bottle of Staticide that works on my car plastic surfaces that eliminates the dust from accumulating on the surfaces.

There are some conductive spray coatings. And there are some anti-static coatings. I'm not sure if there is one with both properties.

Perhaps you would do better asking this question in the Chemical and Material Science section.

Tin Oxide is a rather clear coating. Perhaps you need to consider how toxic your coating might be as well?

All electrically conductive coatings are "anti-static" coatings. Any static charge will conducted/dissipated off the surface to ground.

All anti-static coatings are not electrically conductive coatings.
