Small Birds' Vision: Not So Sharp but Superfast

03/30/2016 10:56 PM

"One may expect a creature that darts around its habitat to be capable of perceiving rapid changes as well. Yet birds are famed more for their good visual acuity. Joint research by Uppsala University, Stockholm University and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) now shows that, in small passerines (perching birds) in the wild, vision is considerably faster than in any other vertebrates -- and more than twice as fast as ours."

Resolving power depends on lens/reflector/aperture diameters, in which small birds would have limited advantage. But small eyes can rotate rapidly, giving them a compensating advantage in detecting motion or change.

I believe the title began with the words "Small bird's vision" SMALL BIRDS - definitely not the description of a raptor.

Because of the smaller head, and the shorter distance between the eye and the brain, one doesn't get the transmission delays that one might expect with a larger head. With a smaller brain, the processing time in response to stimuli is also shorter. And with a smaller body, the transmission delay on the motor side is also much less. It isn't surprising that they are difficult to catch.

Most birds body temperature is around 105°F.

Neurons transfer speed increase with temperature.

So faster sample rates.
