Pipeline corridor width for oil and gas pipelines

08/04/2007 3:47 AM

Can anyone clarify if there is any standard or typical regulation being followed internationally for laying oil and gas pipelines ? If so, what widths for deciding the pipeline corridor are chosen ?

A unique corridor is not always possible.

International standards and guidelines will exist but I think each country should adopt law suiting there own situation.

In SA we have:

A pipeline act dealing with gas/oil/petrol pipelines.

A Water act dealing with water resource crossings and water pollution spills.

An environmental act dealing with environmental issues.

And law dealing with servitudes where private land must be crossed.

I think you should contact your local / national environmental authorities first.

Then tell us what you have and what more you need.

Hi,

I believe that you can seek advice from government authorization organ or international register such as Lloyd's, DNV, ABS. Anyway you could find suggestion in API 1104 and/or DNV 2000. It depend on where is your pipeline: offshore or inland?

For cross country hydrocarbon pipelines to be laid in parallel in the same trench, the minimum clear distance between the pipelines being considered is generally 500 mm.

U r correct, the min distance between pipes shall be 500mm, this again will vary depending on the code and local standards if followed. Sometimes it will be taken to be 2 times the dia of the pipe or 500mm whichever is greater. The main reason for providing would be the the CP system, the two pipes if comes in contact then there would be corossion. To avoid this clerance has to be provided.

My dear

To find the solution, you are kindly requested to read -at least- the following codes and standards :

• ASME Codes for oil and gas Pipelines

ASME B31.4 Liquid Transportation Systems for Hydrocarbons, Liquid Petroleum Gas, Anhydrous Ammonia and Alcohols.

ASME B31.8 Gas Transmission and Distribution Piping Systems. nnASME B13.1 Scheme for Identification of Piping Systems.

• API standards for oil and gas pipelines

API 5L Specification for line pipe.

API 5L1 Recommended practice for railroad transportation of pipeline.

API 5L2 Recommended practice for internal coating of line pipe for non-corrosive gas transmission service .

API 6D Specification for pipeline valves (gate, plug, Ball, and check valves) .

API 10E Recommended practice for application of cement lining of steel tubular goods, handling, installation and joining.

API 14E Recommended practice for design and installation of offshore production platform piping systems.

API 15HR Specification for high pressure fiberglass line pipe. nAPI 15LE Specification for polyethylene line pipe (PE).

API 15LR Specification for low pressure fiberglass line pipe.

API 574 Inspection practices for piping system components. nAPI 1102 Steel pipelines crossing railroads and highways.

API 1104 Welding of pipelines and related facilities.

API 1110 Pressure testing of liquid petroleum pipelines.

API 1111 Design, construction, operation and maintenance of offshore hydrocarbon pipelines.

API 1113 Developing a pipeline supervisory control center.

API 1117 Movement of in-service pipelines.

API 1120 Training and qualification of liquid pipelines maintenance personnel.

API 1129 Assurance of hazardous liquid pipeline system integrity.

API 1130 Computational pipeline monitoring.

API 1149 Pipeline variable uncertainties and their effects on leak detectability.

API 1157 Hydrostatic test water treatment and disposal options for liquid pipeline systems.

API 1161 Guidance document for the qualification of liquid pipeline personnel.

API 2201 Procedure for welding or Hot-Tapping on equipment containing flammable.
