The software that can do what you expect from it and with which you are familiar with.

Whichever you are good at working. I am good with Ms word & AutoCAD.

Excel is good for spread sheet. i do not know how to use this. My kid laughs at me . He cannot use AutoCAd - i laugh at him.

I make spread-sheet on autocad and I simple make printout in A4 size sheet for presentation. No shame as long as i execute the job professionally.

With AutoCAD I also make mine & my client's logo and that makes it more impressive.

That does not mean Excel is no good to me. I will learn it but I do my work faster this way as long as can for, learing a new software and working efficiently on this takes time.

That depends on the user and the kind of work intended to do with the software... Cost is another factor.

It depends on what you want to do with it. If you are going into a commercial area and need to communicate with other disciplines such as Electrical Engineers, Mechanical Engineers, architecs etc etc and combine your drawings with theirs then you need to use an industry standard or a proggrame than is compatible with the Industry Standard ie AutoCad, VectorWorks If you just want to play around then look for shareware or something cheaper

With so many question marks, I'm not sure anyone can alleviate your confusion.

But for what it's worth, I did some fairly thorough research into mid-range, mainstream solid-modelling MCAD software 2 years ago, which included SolidWorks, Inventor, and Solid Edge. Unigraphics, Pro-e and Catia are more high end.

I chose SolidWorks. It is the leading software of the mid-range genre (most licenses worldwide), and has a development policy centered around its user's needs that I value. In fact, some of my enhancement requests have been incorporated. It is this philosophy that I feel will keep them on top. And the more prevalent the software is, the more opportunities present themselves if you know how to use it, much like Autocad was for 2D (which I had used for 12 years).

Hi!
I have used Inventor, MDT, Catia, Pro-e, Solidedge and Solidworks. I find that basics in each case is the same. Solidworks is having the most intutive help and also if I compare the amount spent on the software to the cpabilities of software that I will actually be using, I find solidworks the best.

I have used quite a few programs as well. I prefer Pro/E as it (now) gives you the best bang for your buck. However PTC procrastinated too long with their competitive pricing. As a result, I think Solid Works took the lead in the mid range MCAD market. If you are looking for what is most popular amongst companies and what kind of operators they are looking for I would suggest Solid Works. If I were you, I would learn Pro, Solid Works, and Autocad (2D). This would make you quite employable.

Make sure that it is not a CAD that has incompatible files to other CAD programs. I believe Autocad is incompatible with others for example.....

Learning any CAD program from scratch is difficult enough, but getting locked into just one is awful.

There was a CR4 Blog about this already this year....

Also with some CAD programs, some cheap widely sold student versions use incompatible file types to the full version, be very very careful!!!
