Corporate Gift Idea

07/23/2016 6:40 PM

Here's a poser, the company I work for celebrates it's 25th anniversary this year (I've been there for 19 of them). We will be having a party later this year & the boss would like to give everyone a gift but what gift is suitable for about 55 people, male & female, ages from 20s to 60s and of various nationalities & religions? Our products are all about detecting light so I thought perhaps something solar but everything I looked at was a bit tacky. I found a paper weight but not everyone would appreciate getting this. Suggestions would be welcomed.

(3) things I have to say....

First off, Did he say it? Media sucks now-a-days....

Secondly, if he did say it.... He's making a point on why have Nuclear weapon if you can't/don't use them.

It was a fair question.

Thirdly.... A thermonuclear device is not a very good corporate gift idea.

Depends on the company you keep, LOL. In some relationships, the nuclear option is the only remaining option. DIVORCE.

Or say, "Honey, please step away from the thermonuclear device."

Countries that insist on pumping out terrorists into other countried deserve what they get, and would make nice glass art.

I was thinking of something a little different

As far as your comment;

"Countries that insist on pumping out terrorists into other countried deserve what they get, and would make nice glass art."

So do the country's that are lenient on illegal aliens and immigrants without proper vetting are going to get what they deserve.

When I work at the shipyard on naval contracts in the 90's, we had hired a engineering group from the UK to design the SOC for the navy seals.

In our meetings, they said, they felt naked when they landing in New York, they never saw any security with guns. And they correctly predicted, we are going to be in some serious trouble.

"...and if he did say it, he's making a point on why...."

.

It is fascinating that you alotted plenty of doubt about whether or not the Donald actually made the statement; but you had parently used up all doubt reserves and so had none to spare on the Donald's intentions in making the statement.

.

You have doubts about if he actually said it, but if he did, he was using this closed door briefing as teaching moment to encourage a healthy discussion of nuclear weapons? Suuuuuure.

No, what I doubt is the media...

As far as intentions, the point is if you have but can't use nuclear weapons, a picture of a nuclear weapon accomplishes the same thing.

Re: Corporate Gift Idea

Using 'can't' distorts the mesaage with semantic ambiguity. It isn't that we can't use nuclear weapons. We have not used any recently. There are important reasons for avoiding using nuclear weapons. These reasons typically outweigh the benefits over conventional weapons that nukes might offer.

.

I think your desire to see Trump (and have Trump seen) as a reasonable admirable candidate is leading you to uncharacteristically champion some untenable positions.

"...why have nuclear weapons if you ...don't use them..."

Er..really?

Why have catastrophic health insurance if you don't use it, or for that matter life insurance, home owner's insurance, or any auto insurance above the minimum policy?

What's the use of a person or a pet having vaccinations if there is no exposure to each disease?

Why have AAA or a spare tire? Why in the world do you have that fire extinguisher? We need to set off the fire suppression system in the building, because it hasn't been used, otherwise it is such a waste...what is the point?

Haven't been in an auto accident in decades? Time to cut out those silly seat belts and remove the airbags and all the weight of the bumpers. Why even have that stuff if you don't won't use them? I mean you are to chicken to drive your car into a wall to actually use this important stuff, so you should remove it all.

.

It isn't that Trump says whatever he thinks that bothers me. What bothers me is the quality (actually the lack thereof) of thought that his statements betray.

Well, I beleive this sums it up best.

While some people are dwelling on semantics and foolish statements, others are working.

Unfortunately it seems his foolish statements are about all we have to go on to get an idea of how he might behave in office.

Your disdain for me pointing out that a semantic distortion was required for you to characterize Trump's idea as reasonable; doesn't make it any less of a semantic distortion. Of course you don't want to 'dwell on semantics'; to do that threatens to destroy the plausibility of what must be a very comforting belief....that there is at least one reasonable, qualified, rational, decent major party candidate for President.

Sorry, there just isn't. No amount of trying to shift focus onto what I may of may not be pondering too much changes that unfortunate realty.

You think nobody knows what type of person Trump is.

The key to having insurance is that you may need to use it.

Having insurance and not using it when you should, for what ever reason is stupid.

The key to having Nuclear weapons is that you may need to use it. If you declare your not going to use nuclear weapons, these weapons are useless. That ideology was stronger in the 80's, but still holds true.

Now, I'm not going to get into foolish time wasting semantics because the world is changing. But any leader reviews all his options and does not show the cards they have on how they will deal with a crisis.

No, I have no disdain towards you, the disdain I do have is the feeling beating a dead horse with foolish analogies .... which you seem to enjoy.

Re: Corporate Gift Idea

The problem isn't that nobody knows well enough who Trump is. The problem is that a large segment of the population is ignoring/discounting the importance of his character because they aren't really supporting him or his ideas (case I point as he has layer out no plans of substance), but are getting behind the idea of saying FU to what they see as the establishment and it's perceived processes and values. People either defend his statements without much though or just ignore the implications of what he says.

Trump certainly has some of W's antielitist antiacademia pull, but his rhetoric is far more hostile and reckless than W's. Most people don't seem to care as long as they are on the side that says FU to the establishment.

All I can say is if people don't like Hillary and don't like the Donald for President in November, there are some alternatives:

(1) don't vote - hey it is your right, no one forcing you to vote or not vote.

(2) Green Party - sort of Sanders lite.

(3) Libertarian (Johnson) - we already had a President Johnson, and he brought us Agent Orange, Rolling Thunder, and millions on welfar. This Johnson is a different Johnson, and he would bring none of the above, would get out of foreign wars (where possible, but I don't see it as possible since war has already been declared by Islamic Radical Terrorist organisations). He would roll back taxes, maybe even abolish the IRS (a great idea, IMHO).

So there you go.

there are a few of dark horses that are showing interest of entering that I would like more information (background) on.

This could have used a thread all its own in the break room instead of hi-jacking a simple question on corporate gift idea.

moving on.....

Yes, but like most third party attempts it only pulls votes off one tap, not both. It assures Mrs. Clinton a positive result for them to even be in the race, unless the green party siphons off more.

I don't think you get it. The punch line is that TOO OFTEN we judge others by the worst examples in their groups, while extending to ourselves a credit that is only related to intentions, and not results. The only one here who has a right to brag, bray, crow, or otherwise toot his own horn is the one who has a long record of positive results to show for efforts, not failed policies based on "I intended to make this better, but it didn't happen because, x...y...z.

Thank you for taking a moment to explain what you take from the message. It is about what I take from the message as well.

It doesn't strike me as being all that profound or noteworthy. We all have different perspectives. De gustibus non est disputandum.

'...in their groups.' !!!?!?

Yeah, I don't read that into the statement at all. We do see it differently.

You really understand 'in their groups' to be implied and generally understood?

I understood it to mean judging groups for the worst examples, not judging individuals for the worst examples of those with whom we might group them.

I may indeed not have understood the message you do. If your interpretation is indeed common/standard, then I am surprised, but obviously very interested.

'...there is absolutely no reason to "expect" an annual pay increase.

None!...'

.

Lyn, earlier when you asked me what made me an expert on what people think, I was tempted to discount your analysis and suggest you probably also have decent insight into what people think.

I am here to admit how wrong I was. You apparently have no idea how people think. Also, if you wish to consider me an expert on how people think, it is probably warranted given the severity of your misunderstanding.

Feel free to use me as a reference/resource. I won't be right all the time, but it will be a vast improvement over what you are currently working with.

This would be a one-off gift to commemorate the companies 25th year. We already get annual increases & monthly/quarterly bonuses if profits allow.

You are right, that is somewhat of a different situation.

.

With that in mind, the question that comes to mind is; why are you giving gifts? Make the food or entertainment better if you have to spend a little more. If anything people bring gifts too a birthday party. If you have to give gifts away to get people to celebrate, there might be other problems.

I've not said it once, but I'l say it again.

Nigh- Get them a memento. Don't listen to all this crap about what people appreciate or do not. It's all based on greed and personal preference.

You can not give out CASH, coins, gift cards or charitable donations and expect them to be commemorative gifts. You had it right the first time.

If the gifts aren't customized, they can be regifted by those who think the gift is not for them, but would somehow be ok for their in-law etc.

Anyone who bitches about a commemorative gift around the water cooler should be brought into the supervisors office and reprimanded for dissension.

What a bunch first world problem blowing self righteous ungrateful jackass's.

Congrats to you company for thinking about their staff while moving forward successfully.
