Member Book Review - Shop Manual for SR-71

09/15/2016 12:38 PM

I stumbled across some (to me, anyway) interesting looking shop manuals:

I've never seen any of these or their ilk on bookstore shelves. Can anyone offer an insight about these sort of manuals? Worth the money as entertainment? Well and lavishly illustrated and footnoted? Written at fourth-grade comprehension level? Technically accurate - accurate enough, anyway?

The books shown are listed as available at Amazon.com. There are many, many similarly themed subject - The ISS, Hubble, Soyuz, the Lunar Rover...

Bonus discussion: If you were able to specify the publication of a Haynes manual for something - alternately, a 'For Dummies' book - what would the subject be? How about if you were approached to WRITE a 'For Dummies' book - what would your yellow pearl of wisdom be about?

Wikipedia article – For Dummies book series

"Haynes was known for providing manuals with detail information on how to repair vehicles and so the title "Owners' Workshop Manual" would give you an expectation of greater detail on the nuts and bolts of this aircraft. But it ended up being more about the history and running dialogue of some of it's flights. It would give you hints about some of the ongoing problems of the aircraft over time but give you little of what it took to solve those problems. I'm a technical type of guy and want to know more about how the parts and pieces go together on these complex wonderful machines. So I'm a little disappointed that it didn't really do that. It also missed the opportunity in giving really detailed photographs of the aircraft especially given that there is an excellent example of a fully restored SR71 at the Evergreen Museum in McMinnville, Oregon. A great opportunity lost here."

How about an 'all about doors' manual.....including replacing weatherstripping properly, with sources and step-by-step instructions....including sliding glass doors....How to identify the brand and locate the proper parts and pieces needed for old expensive equipment....

I've been working on a 'Doors for Dummies' book for a year or so. So far, the emphasis is entirely on contract grade doors - but a book as you describe might be more widely read. This (your observation) is a widespread and common problem. I'll give that some thought. Thank you my friend. GA vote.

I have 3 sets of 8' x 8' sliding glass doors, very heavy and expensive I would like to replace the weather stripping on, but the door people just want to replace the doors with what looks like cheaper made, certainly not in cost, but in quality, models...I have run into this problem with doors every time I want to replace the sealing weatherstripping with OEM quality materials....They seem to sell only cheap generic cut to size crap in Lowes and other building supply stores...

Pemko, Frost king.

Door jamb: 1. Measure height of door opening on each side. 2. Cut a long section of jamb weatherstrip for each side. 3. Close the door. 4. Place the door jamb weatherstrip on the door stop with seal lightly touching the face of the door. 5. Fasten in place with nails or screws. 6. Measure and cut the short section to fit across the top of the door. 7. Fasten in place with nails or screws. Tools: hammer, screwdriver, utility knife, hacksaw.

Don't forget that for most of us that don't have "door" in our name the sourcing of replacement weather stripping and replacement of what the weather stripping attaches to can be the biggest problems of all. Take for example the Stanley door on my workshop with the pre-hung "rapid rot" feature ... ... sorry, we need to be polite here so I can't finish my thought about the quality of my workshop door.

Most of the pre hung type of doors are only primed or painted on the external sections of the door or frame. On a new door/frame, lightly sand all surfaces, apply at least two coats of primer designed for external use to all surfaces, allow to dry thoroughly, apply two or more coats of gloss external paint. In severe areas, use plastic sheeting to create a trough, then dip the frame pieces and door in primer blended with Henry's waterproofing, then apply paint. Sheet copper cut and formed in a channel, then applied to door-frame base will repel termites and insects as it oxidizes.

SolarEagle do you know the original Mfg, if so call them, they most likely will give you the name of the local supplier that handles their product. If not might on their own supply you with the weatherstrip you require. I have found on occasion that they will send requested stripping at little cost just for good relations to the customer.

I hope the Saturn V manual is a bit more helpful for Saturn V owners than the manual supplied by Haynes for their own DIY kit "Build Your Own Internal Combustion Engine"

The kit is a small desk top model in transparent plastic that lets you see how the engine operates when it is running - driven by a small electric motor (batteries not included)

The Haynes manual was not clear on a couple of points. I wrote to Haynes to tell them some parts were not identified in the drawings, and the assembly instructions not being clear about how some of the parts went together.

Haynes passed the buck. The kit was made under license - so speak to the suppliers.

I managed without the manual - it was my own basic knowledge of IC engines that enabled me to make sense of the components to build the engine - I only contacted Haynes thinking I was being helpful.

In due respect, Haynes should have dealt with the matter themselves, it is not incumbent on me to take action to resolve their issues of product quality. Poor show to be honest considering their raison d'etre is to produce manuals of this type.

So back to the OP, I wouldn't recommend Saturn V owners trying to fly it without first checking with Haynes about warranties embodied in the 'mall print' if relying on the Haynes manual as their only source of guidance.
