What Are You Enthusiastic About?

09/28/2016 2:42 PM

I thought it might be interesting to note what it is you are enthusiastic about.

I had a long time friend who was a gun enthusiast. He could tell you if a gun used in a movie or TV show was correct for the time period. I have met others who had the same enthusiasm for sports, being able to name all the players and their records on a baseball team. Even I have a somewhat ability to identify trains. I'm sure there are some who are just as enthusiastic over automobiles to the point that they know just about everything there is to know about them.

I am keen on a number of things, science, food, motorsports but what really gets me going is fireworks. I've been staging public firework displays for 30 years, currently as part of a local bonfire society. We still fire by hand, nothing beats the buzz of being surrounded by explosions.

Mischief, mayhem, running amok, burning things, arguments, sleeping and somewhere down the line fabrication and engineering related something or others.

Now there's a kindred spirit.

To quote W.C. Fields, “Everybody's got to believe in something. I believe I'll have another beer.”

To the original question, my enthusiasm for most things has waned over the years, what with situational changes in my life.

I used to enjoy shooting, 4 wheeling in the deserts and mountains of Arizona, golf, driving race cars and playing the ponies.

Now, my main goal in life at my age, what with the situational changes, is to not outlive my money and have a little fun along the way.

working since 1975 as a equipment maintenance specialist. So obviously my interest is problematic plant, equipment and challenging technical problems.

I have had horses since I was 8, so I've always been interested in that and spent many years learning. For the last 4 years I have been selling handmade items online (for my grandmother) and so I have learned a lot about the ins and outs of marketing and running an online shop. With so much information online it's easy to be overwhelmed with information and spend an almost endless amount of time researching.

Other than that, I read a lot, and so no matter what I'm reading about there are always new things to learn. Even a fiction book will have plot elements that are very specific, for example, the one I just finished had a lot of info about maple syrup making, which is something we have been doing at our house for the last couple of years -- so I learned a lot about that just while reading something else for fun.

I keep trying to figure ways to improve the lives of the "poorest of the poor" (usually those in the 3rd World rural environments), but coming up with the ideas and ways to do it is not the problem, getting others to buy in and follow the lead is the main issue I've faced. After retirement I did it myself (as much as possible), but at 74 1/2+ with several physical ailments it becomes damned near impossible.

The Greek meaning of the word enthusiasm stems from an expression involving one being possessed by a god. In the Christian community it takes on a similar meaning, that God dwells within the heart and soul of a person. This is not the same as meaning that said person is always under the express control of God, far from it. It does mean that when said person aligns themselves with the pure, divine, and higher intent of God, then their actions will reflect the character of God; the person becomes a partaker of divine nature.

What am I enthusiastic about? Learning new ways of getting things done, new skills, or learning something about this vast Universe that I didn't know last week. Also about helping people meet their objectives at work and at home.
