What Is In Your Bucket List?

09/28/2016 3:01 PM

I will turn 82 in another week. All my life, I have been comfortable with and interested in engineering and science topics. When I wanted to know about a certain topic, I would go to my local library and search through books until I found what I was looking for. I was able to comprehend and never had any problem applying my new found knowledge to my job or life generally. But along came computers and I found myself lacking in understanding. Although I enrolled in computer courses and was able to do "BASIC" programming, that's about as far as I could go. Computer science has developed so fast that I can't keep up with it. I cannot understand the recent as I can't even understand what came before. There must be something lacking in my ability to learn. Children can grasp computers with ease at an early age. Language is another area where children can learn a language with ease while they are young. Does this mean I am too old to learn? I am not senile, but I would like to keep on learning.

If I were to make a bucket list, understanding computers, smart phones, a new language and playing a musical instrument would be in it. What is in yours?

Maybe a little early, Happy Birthday.

At 81 maybe that old hard disc is turning slow, has few bad sectors

but it still turning.

So don't give up!

Getting away from computers, smart phones, politics and the media!

The problem as I see it is two fold, first your time perspective changes over time, second, it takes a lot of energy and time to learn new complicated processes, and that requires dedication and proper motivation, the kind that comes with the instinct of survival and hunger....When you take a leisurely approach, such as in a hobby, the intensity of your interaction is diminished, therefore more time is needed to learn, but then the problem is it seems like it's taking too much time because of your perspective, then concentration and confidence breaks down, leading to abandonment of purpose....

Sheesh... You sound like my fourth grade teacher. I got that same dribble from him... all three years.

Seriously, I think you're right about the time perspective. Additionally, the cumulative concerns of a seven year old are both fewer and simpler than any of us.

That passage of time thing. I hear a lot of people talk about it but for me I apparently don't have the same range of scale.

I don't perceive a day or week or month or year with any significant difference in time than I did as a kid or anywhere inbetween.

I can sit down at any time look at a clock change numbers then do a 58 count open my eyes and sure enough 1 - 2 seconds later the number changes again. Been able to do that since I learned to tell time.

You just have to grow old. You don't have to grow up.

I've never felt the need to see if I could count out 60 seconds and I couldn't tell you in what year many things occurred in my life, mostly what years I was employed by the various companies I ran into the ground.

I have no bucket list, I just get up in the morning and live for the day.

Survivors like you and me, tend to take the same attitude. However, I still enjoy going to work every day (well most days♫♫). Perhaps that is because I really don't have to, but I need the learn something new, or try to improve on something or even better, try to impart some knowledge from my experiences to someone else. One of the reasons I haven't retired yet and I am still not sure when I will do so.

I can't recall ever having had a bucket list per se, and don't really have one now. Life comes one day at a time and as long as I wake up tomorrow, well,,, life will continue for me and I can make of it what I want to. The only difference now is that I have more choices.

You're not old enough yet to hit that time when, one day, you realize that a year has gone by and it seems like it was only a few months. You hear a hit song you know and sing along with it, then suddenly it hits you - that was recorded 50 years ago - how is that possible? When you were 40, something that happened 20 years ago seems like 20 years ago. When you're mid 60's, 50 years ago seems like 20 years ago. Time lines seem to compress as you get older. IT WILL HAPPEN TO YOU - just wait.

In my "earlier" years, they were actually 24 minutes. Advertising was limited to 6 minutes per half hour.

My bucket list uses real buckets.

That's about 400 of them.

Bucket culvert under my driveway and sections of my yard.

Looks like I may need about 400 more to finish it being the bucket stash apparently got raided this summer without me knowing it. At least I Didn't dig the whole ~140 foot trench only to find out my culvert materials had been raided.

Unhappy questions will be getting asked.

Re: What Is In Your Bucket List?

09/28/2016 6:11 PM

Early Happy Birthday.

I wouldn't get too worked up about modern computers and "smart" phones. In the "old days" there was a general trend to refine products over time. Refine would include making them easier to use, more uniform and operation well organized. For the past 20 years or so there has been profit motive in just making them different. Sure, there were usually improvements too, but each new release had to be different to justify to the consumer why they should throw away something that works well and spend a lot of money on the new thing. A lot of us have no tolerance for things becoming more disorganized just because someone else wants to get rich at our expense.

(To learn more about the above paragraph read the writings of Lyn)

The kids do better than us with smart phones for four reasons:

1) They are like squirrels. They have a lot of free time on their hands. They didn't plan out the full Rube Goldburg method of getting to the birdfeeder seed. They just had so much free time that they ran out of ways to do it wrong.

2) With common core and other modern social engineering it doesn't bother them that life is becoming less organized and less efficient.

3) If they screw it up they set it aside and say "it broke". They don't admit to breaking it therefore they didn't break it. If they didn't break it then there are no failures on their record.

4) The smart phone is the center of their social life and therefore the smart phone is the key to life having meaning and value. To us a phone is something we use to make or receive a few phone calls.

If you want to restore a little balance in your life set one of these "modern gadget wiz kids" down and try to teach them programming on a Linux box that has a keyboard but no mouse and no graphical interface. I tried once. With the reactions I got you would have thought I filled his shorts with sand spurs.

The question was "what is on your bucket list?"

Without a tour bus or other transportation I would like to get off the train out front of Arlington National Cemetery, walk past Unknowns, stand on hill with Pentagon view, gaze out from patio at JFK, go out the front, across the bridge, around Lincoln, past the Reflecting Pool, past Washington, past Capitol, to Supreme Court steps, around other side of Capitol, back to Washington, past Treasury up to White House and then back past Eisenhower to Ellipse (I think it is normally open to public). I'd like to do it all in one walk. I have seen most of these individually. For some reason I would like to take one single walk and connect all the dots.

I've seen the portable Wall. With 5K - 10K hogs running as Honor Guard its arrival makes quite an impression. More to the point, the people that visit the Wall make quite an impression. I don't know if I ever want to visit the permanent Wall.

Hey, I ressemble point 1 !

Not sure what goes on my bucket list, but being able to deal with 82 candles sounds good. Many congrats, ronsetto. The older people I know take on new challenges, anything out of their norm. When a little older, I'll get youngest members of family to put suggestions in a pot and pick one at random. Short of it being visit the moon, I'll give it a shot.

Like your #4.

Several years ago I had the privilege of visiting Arlington for the burial of a relative who earned the right to be interred there.

The interment included the whole nine yards: honor guard, USMC pallbearers (members from the service of the deceased serve as pallbearers), 21 gun salute, and "Taps" by a bugler. Just watching the pallbearers folding the American flag covering the casket would send shivers down your back.

If you get to D,C., be sure to visit the Marine Corps memorial in Arlington, but just outside the cemetery, as well as the WWII memorial honoring those who fought in both theaters.

Hope you get your wishes!

Many years ago now, a post on CR4 asked, what is curiosity? My reply was that curiosity is an emotion? And that is my feelings regarding CR4, etc. and like some on this forum, I am retired, and after a working life of problem solving, I am still curios, and yes the mind is getting slow, so my entries are aimed at younger minds to see if I can stir up some curiosity?

So! My curiosity is, what is correct vocal singing technique.

This is prophetic.

You said, "after a working life of problem solving, I am still curios".

The definition of curios is "a rare, unusual, or intriguing object".

I agree.

For some reason I can't put my finger on, I've always wanted to see the giant redwoods in California.

Having just gone to look for more info. I wouldn't mind going to see several of these superlative trees.

I wonder why most of the tallest are in California and Tasmania? I see that Tasmania is about the same distance South of the equator as the Redwoods are North.

They are a sight to behold, indeed.

My father worked for the US Forest Service one summer and the family lived in a primitive cabin all summer in Sequoia National Park. I was 8 years old and in Heaven.

There was a fallen Redwood Tree that had been flattened on one side so that vehicles could drive along the top of it for about 100 feet.

First - good luck in your endeavors. Sounds like a good plan to me.

I'm just past retirement age for full SS, but not retired yet. So I'm a bit younger than you. I have had my fill of electronic communications and instruments in my work as a controls engineer, and already can play several musical instruments. My "bucket list" is based on physical activities still possible at this age. Actually, I don't have a bucket list - I have a bike it list. I'm going to bike building school as soon as possible, then taking what I build and hitting all the spots I read about in the bicycle magazines. I was beaten badly in a short sprint by an 82 year old cyclist on a rail trail in Massachusetts about 10 years ago. He said he averaged 10,000 miles / year of cycling ( I was only doing 3500 miles / year) - I want to be able to do that too. So far my knees and heart are holding on fine. Got to make some compromises in the seat / handle bar positions for bad shoulders, but that is part of cycling and wrecking - if you don't break bones you get bad shoulders.

Get yourself an Arduino kit from Radio Shack and get busy. They all sorts of kits.

It is open source software, thus you will learn at first (if not last) by simply copying code submitted on the forums for that.

My first exposure to programming was Algol on a Burroughs B5500 at the USAFA cadet center...keypunch 80 col cards, and stack them to run later with all the other 'batches' to run that night, I've seen computers go from 1500sqft of rack to a 16 pin 'system on chip' dip with all the bells and whistles like the one used on the Arduino, and in meeting the young people who develop projects around them gives me faith in the future, but there seems to be a great number of young people who, if it wasn't for charitable people, would starve sitting in their own waste.

My experience was similar to yours. My first college software course was Algol. Every week, they assigned a simple problem that could be almost solved mentally. So, it was write the program, and:

  1. Wait in line at keypunch machine
  2. Turn in deck
  3. Wait 18 hours to pick up print out and deck
  4. Fix missing semicolons, etc.
  5. Wait in line to punch new cards
  6. Turn in deck
  7. Repeat 3-6 until time runs out.

I never did get a program to run error free. I did finish the course with the firm conviction that computers were useless. It took a week back then to accomplish what I can do today in 5-10 minutes.

I am a year older than you but do have an active bucket list. The surprises will come as you go down your list. Alaska just happened. Wanted to see it for its geography. But what I found were way beyond simply the views. Earthquakes happen regularly. We saw a fault line going up the side of a mountain with a ravine filled with boulders. Interesting to contemplate a visible line and what was below thousands of feet. But on this road to Dawson that crossed the ravine, the engineers got tired of rebuilding the bridge so they anchored it on one side of the fault line and simply cantilevered it across to the other side. The bridge stays in good condition and they simply rework the road to meet the bridge on the other side after the quakes. Also to see the 10' depression in a wide swath where the 1964 Anchorage quake sunk the land but now large trees are growing.

Many things I did not see, such as Mt. Denali which was shrouded in clouds, so Alaska stays on my bucket list. My health is good so the bucket list is actually growing!

First order of business-HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

My bucket list consists of building all of the models (mostly cars) that I purchased or received during the past 30+ years.

Number 1 will be finally assembling a Formula 1 Lotus racer that I received from my wife several years ago. After that finishing some kits that I had started, but was interrupted by family and work.

Then some kits that I bought, but never even took out of the box - I knew they weren't going to be available when I had the time to spend when I had the time to work on them (and twas right). Then I'm looking forward to working on some warbirds, and finally a nice full rigged sailing ship, rigging and all.

I figure that will keep me off the streets for a while, and I've become a rather voracious reader - really into history and non-fiction.

Re: What Is In Your Bucket List?

My bucket list at one time was to retire at age 55 which would have given me 36 years with my employer. Many years back I attended a lunch time seminar on stress reduction. The moderator asked, "What would you do if you didn't need to work for a living"? When my turn to respond arrived, understanding what said moderator was looking for, I combined my love for motorcycling and photography and said, "motorcycle photojournalist". All of my former English teachers would tell you, without any argument from me, that I can't write! Approaching my 55 birthday I was offered a package which I accepted although my employment continued for another 9 months. Somewhere along the line I had submitted an article to a motorcycle magazine which got published. Then there was a second one. Next thing I knew I had been added to the magazine staff as a "contributing writer". My 21st. article will be in this December's issue. Not only did I get my bucket list but something else never anticipated. Manufacturers of aftermarket equipment send me free equipment to install and test then write up evaluations. I'm preparing to go "independent" providing me greater opportunities to seek out what I want to evaluate without restrictions from those formerly above me and the delays involved with printed publications. My reviews will be published as long as I want them to be with no limitations on how many photos will be used since I won't be constrained with X number of pages...my Website has lots of room.

Now all I need is for someone to hand me the keys to a $30K Trike with matching trailer and for them to pay me by the mile to ride and write. I'm working on this.

Member wmerryall, why not publish some of your work, such as that which you sent to me. It is good.

I'd have done it myself, but it does identify you by name.

Cheers.

Lyn, I'm not certain what you meant by "publish" some of my work. Anonymity is not an issue for me and I would be happy to put a link to my Website here for anyone who wishes to peruse my writings if that were permitted.

I think it is fine.

There's even a provision in your profile page for it.

HomepageUrl for your web site, if you have one. Optional. (250 chars max)

Thanks for the tip Lyn. My profile has been updated to include a link to my Website. To everyone else, if you read something there you don't like, blame Lyn...it was his suggestion.

With a line like "wherever my motorcycle has taken me", you might enjoy the music of Moe Dixon. Well worth searching out.

More of a "Sixties On Six" guy myself. It follows me all the way across the country.

All I can say is...........SNAP!!!

I know the feeling well, I retired from full time work last year and I am afraid my only forte........if I could call it that.........was power point presentations, and I needed those for teaching.

Give this software a try.

I taught it to myself a year out of college and I've managed to fashion a career out of it.

Programming with pictures. much more intuitive than text based languages.

That might work well for some applications, but try 'picturing' a 10 axis real time adaptive welding machine and the parameters that need to be adjusted in real time.....the most productive environment for programming and debug---assembly and FORTH (but that was 30 years ago...running an 8MHZ 8086 on an STD buss, software running out of a 8K eprom), and I bet that would be true today for a minimal real time system...
