I can see that for high bypass turbo fan engines, yes, a transmission is essential.

1) the turbo fan has limited rpm speed due to its larger radius. (not allowed to go past Mach 1, as this could stall airflow over the blades).

2) the gas turbine needs higher spindle speeds to achieve its maximum mass flow, and fuel economy, as I recall.

Bah. I'd be more impressed if they made them with manual gearboxes so the pilots had to shift gears like a big rig every few thousand feet while climbing of descending.

18 speed super split shifters with triple overdrives for the Airbus 380's and a 5 and 4 grain truck gearbox system for the old 737-200's!
