Would You Trust Them With Your Money?

08/09/2007 9:43 AM

Pretend, just for a moment, that the year is 1978. "Shadow Dancing" is playing on your eight-track player as you sort through today's mail. Because you're a wealthy investor (OK, now we're really pretending), you receive word of many business opportunities. Still, this letter is a little different. As you dump its contents onto your avocado-colored kitchen table, a blurry photograph flutters and lands atop your bulky HP 01 wrist calculator.

Would you trust them with your money?

If you said "no", you can comfort yourself with knowing that hindsight is 20/20 vision. This picture from 1978 shows the following people:

Starting from the top, left: Steve Wood, Bob Wallace & Jim Lane
Next row: Bob O'Rear, Bob Greenburg, Marc McDonald & Gordon Letwin
Next row: Bill Gates, Andrea Lewis, Marla Wood & Paul Allen

IBM had its phalanx of clean-cut executives in crisp, white shirts, but Microsoft 's groovy founders would have their day in the sun.

With electronic banking, maybe the question could also be 'Are You Trusting Them With Your Money Now'. They could all pass for BBC Open University presenters. Bet they all still had kipper ties in the wardrobe.

In about 1983 or 1984, when I was in the Air Force stationed at Los Angeles Air Force Station, I was working with staff folks to get the Air Force "computerized". We were using Zenith computers with dual 5 1/4 inch drives. Well, we did get one with a 1 megabyte hard drive. Anyway, what I am getting to is a memo we received from DoD (Department of Defense). It stated that no DoD entity would consider ANY contractual proposal from Microsoft, Bill Gates specifically, because of thier "questionable business practices."

While at Bergrstrom AFB, TX (from 1985 thru 1989) I was involved with building an intell correlation computer. Our contractors built our "PCs" from the ground up, wrote thier own BIOS, OS and Apps, even their own keyboard and mouse driver (called a R.A.T. - Random Access Tracker). So, I was surprised when I got to Peterson AFB, CO in the fall of 1989 and discovered that they had PCs running on Windows 3.0 and had Word!!!

Even the Air Force fell to the "mighty M"!!!
