World Series Champions Chicago Cubs

11/03/2016 8:11 AM

Never thought I'd put those five words together without irony.

Need a long memory:

"Until 2016, the Chicago Cubs had not won a World Series championship since 1908—a stretch of bad luck".

- Wikipedia.

Out of interest, is this thread about playing football with an odd shaped ball or cricket with cudgels?

Neither. It is American baseball. It only has a vague commonality with cricket, that a ball is used, it is pitched, and a batter (or batsman as is the case) attempts to strike the ball. That is where all similarities abruptly end.

Don't forget that another strange custom practiced here is that all the balls are rubbed with special mud, by the umpires, before every game.

Some may think this custom strange, but the players don't seem to mind.

Actually, if the pattern holds, 2017, then 2125.

♪Go Cubs, go,

♪Go Cubs go!

♪Hey Chicago, whadya say?

♪Cubs are gonna win today.

That song's being sung so much over here, it'll probably be used as a Christmas carol at Marshal Fields.

I woke up this morning to my daughter watching the Back to the Future II scene where Marty sees the headline "CUBS WIN WORLD SERIES" in 2015. One year off but a little weird to say the least.

"The last time the Cubs won the World Series, (before 2016) pre-sliced bread DID NOT EXIST."

That will raise a few eyebrows, and drop a few jaws.

Re: World Series Champions Chicago Cubs

At least someone managed to fold some actual engineering back into this topic - sliced bread, that is.

I don't tend to watch professionally tainted sports, but last night I had to make another exception. The other time was when someone was telling me that Dallas was winning football games, and I just had to look, and they proved themselves to be the losers they really are.

The Cubs, I have no ax to grind with them. I have no carborundum to wear them down with either. I have some pity on the poor Indians, but they really fought an excellent fight, and with a little luck (they had a modicum of this early in the game with Cubs' errors), they could have come out on top.

I think every Cubs player and certainly every one of their solid fans got a huge shot in the arm of redemption last night. Happy for them. Maybe some of the other shootings in Chicago will decrease now?

I fell asleep during the seventh inning stretch, and didn't find out until this morning who won or by how much. I was pretty sure the Cubbies had it. I woke up from a dream about my room full of smoke and cinders, and when I first awoke, it seemed to be true. I could even smell the smoke. Then I woke up the rest of the way, and everything was just fine. Sort of a start. Probably a bad omen for my experiments.

It symbolizes I will be burned somehow. I will have to redouble my efforts to make sure my electrolysis reactor does not plug itself and over pressure, or have some uncontrolled heated component that results in ignition of hydrogen.

I did notice that baseball has instant replay now. Wow.

As a long-ago Red Sox fan, it was somewhat anti-climatic once the Babe's Curse was broken. It felt like something 'special' was lost. It's as if Charlie Brown actually got to kick the football. Of course, the last time I paid any attention to baseball, Carl Yastrzemski was still on first.

What amazes me is that it is called a World Series if it is only played in America .

The World Series started before other countries started playing baseball. It is truly an American sport.

I think later on, this spring in March, is the International championship. Teams from such countries as Italy and Japan will compete. I doubt the Cubs will be there.
