Rare Book: "Air-Supported Structures" by Bailly et al.

11/24/2016 11:25 PM

I'm trying to find a book called Air-Supported Structures by Bailly, Mesa, Pardini and Tjerandsen, published by the envirotecture group of the University of Washington - in 1970. I have a partial photocopy which is missing most of the first 31 pages, and I'm looking for a source for the missing pages. The remainder of the book is superbly written, so I'm eager to get a complete copy.

The book is not even in the Library of Congress' catalog, so I am getting desperate. I am looking for somebody who either has this book or has borrowing privileges at the University of Washington library (which does have one copy in storage) and is willing to scan thirty pages or so.

Hate to be the one to burst your bubble, but have you looked at "BookFinder.com"? They have 6 books on air-supported structures, the Author is listed as The American Society of Civil Engineers and between 92-95 pages thick.

Good luck

That was the first place I checked after Google books. It's not the right book.

It wouldn't have burst my bubble to find it there...

It isn't looking good.

Maybe the University?

The guy I got my partial copy from was actually using it to learn to calculate the skirts of his hovercraft project.

I am (was) looking for a good, clear general reference on the analysis and design of inflatable structures. I am interested in both lighter-than-air flight and hovercraft, so I have more than one use in mind. I have other books and ebooks on that subject, but I find this book more enlightening than anything else that I have seen, hence the interest in completing it.

I'm into aviation, but I prefer solid metal supporting me while air-born

Still not sure if this is for a hovercraft or a "Metro Dome"? There is a lot of information on the internet on both and everything in-between

Other than the University of Washington, you may be S.O.L.

Oh yes, I remember this story. It circulated in LTA circles as proof that God really intended for man to fly by buoyancy rather than by dynamic lift.

Here's a guy who did everything wrong, had everything GO wrong, and lived to tell the story.

All tensile structures, but inflatable ones in particular, are scary. At first blush, they look very straightforward, until you realize that every change of shape also changes not only the loads applied but the distribution of stress as well!

Hovercraft skirts usually have a good margin of strength, and of course you don't have far to fall. Balloons and airships need to be lightweight, but you also have to make sure they are adequate, as there is often very far to fall.

I have a friend and fellow Structural Engineer (I once worked with him too) who once worked for an engineering firm in New York City that designed air-inflated roof structures for stadiums and what not.

He also did his Masters of Engineering Thesis at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (Troy, NY) on these types of structures.

He may have a copy of the book you are seeking. I will contact him to see if you has it. Keep your finger crossed!

Well, it's good to have it officially confirmed: one holder, the University of Washington.

Are any of the authors still alive? If so and you can find them, one of them might send you a photocopy. Or contact the American Society of Civil Engineers. You have my sympathy and my respect for trying to do this from overseas. Good luck!

The ASCE doesn't seem to have had anything to do with this book.

But tracing the authors makes sense. Some might even still be on the faculty at U. of W. Didn't think to check that....

Go to your local library and ask the research librarian to request to borrow the UW copy. Then you can photduplicate the rest. I have done this a couple of times when I needed books that were out of print.

It's a great idea, and I would have done it and not bothered you if I were in the States with access to a corresponding library.

I live in the Philippines. Not a chance a book would be lent across the Pacific.

Why not just contact the correct department at U of W, speak to the Department Chair, be referred to the faculty member in question, or whomever is perhaps now or ever was involved in that research, and have them refer you to a research assistant whom you could pay a nominal fee to photocopy or scan the book?

I've sent a query to the U. of Washington library. If that doesn't work, the next step is the academic department concerned.

That book will be found under the rubble where the air pump went out.

I am able to go online at my local library and do a materials request. At some point they ask for a link to more information and I paste in the link from worldcat.

One of my projects is digitizing "The Radiant City" by Le Courbusier. I've had to do an interlibrary loan a couple of times and I've gotten a different book each time. The last time it had the slipcover on it. An interesting example of sixties bookcover art.

Do you mean that they also "deliver" the materials on-line, as scans? Too much to hope for...

No, I guess not - you wouldn't be having to digitize Le Corbusier's book if that were the case.

I am a lifetime member of the UW Alumni Association, and I think I have permanent library privileges. I live about 240 miles away, though, and have no impending plans to visit Seattle. However, if I do get the chance to go there, I will try to remember your quest and to see if I can help. But if I say "Stay tuned", you might be on hold for quite a while.
