Custom Lighting with Fiber Optics?

12/01/2016 8:04 PM

Building custom furniture for a library & media room and have to create some unique focused lighting for reading... yes books! Was trying to decide which material to use and came across this article. Glass vs Plastic in fiber optics applications. The project is high end for a very particular customer. Any suggestions?

1. Ask for more money.
2. Get a less persnickety customer.

Most of the fiber optic lighting I've ever seen were just decorative items, not transmitting enough light for reading. It seems that LEDs would be a better choice for focused reading lights, IMHO.

Since this is an indoor use and likely will never see temperatures above 40 C, and since it is for general purpose lighting, plastic fiber optics would be fine. Fiber optics are good if you want a central location for your main light source and plan to pipe the lighting via the fibers around to different locations.

But don't ignore LED lighting. It is (or can be) low voltage and low wattage, so it can be placed almost anywhere a fiber can go without the bother of preparing the fibers. It allows more flexibility for spot and flood lighting areas, and you can choose a range of LED colors to add dramatic impact without having to integrate filtering systems like you would with fiber optic lighting.

Plenty of specialist fibre optic lighting companies online that should be able to offer products and advice for reading room lighting.

Was trying to decide which material

Probably plastic nowdays for general room lighting if you really want to go down the path of fibre optic lighting.

I don't think it's a good idea to have the light too focused on one spot, then everytime you change position you need to readjust the light...Secondly you need a style that blends with the room....I would also suggest that reading position is an individual preference that must be considered....

I have a floor lamp that is fully adjustable that I like....

If you want something stylish and expensive, then maybe something like this...

This sorta makes me wonder if it shouldn't be in the commercial section.

Glass based systems make sense for medical equipment where heat , chemical and/or UV sterilization may be employed.

High grade plastic fiber is common for high end lighting systems. There are a number of different companies selling light "engines" and the necessary fiber / components for high end residential and commercial installation. A lot can be achieved.

You must figure a certain amount of loss (a 200W source won't get you 200W worth of light at the point of illumination) The light source itself can also produce a fair amount of heat and fan noise. The farther they are located.. the more turns.. the greater the light loss etc..

Of course there must be more quiet and RGB / LED based system to consider.

Otherwise. Fun and rewarding. enjoy
