What Type Of Hose Should I Use?

03/29/2017 9:01 AM

To transfer nitroglycerine through the höse to the tank, what is the type of höse should I use like EPDM rubber, FKKM(Perflorocarbon) elastomer, silicone based rubber etc.,which is suitable as mechanically, termally, resistive, conductive, flexible.

Don't you think maybe you should check with a more authoritative (and answerable) body than an anonymous internet forum? Please tell us that this application is far, far away from any living things when in operation (and be prepared for some structural damage).

No one on this forum with a conscience should touch this with a 10-meter cattle prod! You need to consult a reputable hose manufacturer who is willing to assume liability for their answer.

So what you are saying is that only those of us who have no conscience and an overall lack of concern for dumb people doing things that may prove self elimination can reply?

Well I will have you know that I firmly believe stupidity is ultimately a self eliminating disease! Either the carrier learns form their stupid mistakes and doesn't do them any more or they die from them and thusly eliminate their stupidity as well.

As far as my advice the OP and uis hose I recomend he use one that long enough!

There nothing worse than buying a good hose only to find out you got one that's just a bit too short for the job.

You have a point about Darwinian selection, but it would be kind of sad if a lot of innocents get carried along as collateral damage.

Really, no one with even a lick of interest in self preservation should be touching a nitroglycerin container with a cattle prod....even a 10 meter cattle prod.

Reminds me of when I worked for a company that made pneumatic & fluidic valves. A customer asked if the valves would work with nitroglycerine, we couldn't say so we sent them a sample valve. Never heard from them again, I've often wondered what happened.

If this is serious then the correct approach would be to telephone various hose manufacturers directly, and not bother all the sleeping beauties on CR4.

The chemistry of the hose should be the least of your worries. There are so very many other tools, materials and other concerns that if you have to ask about the hose then you should not be working at all with nitroglycerin. Even if this is only in medication volumes.

Best to talk with a hose manufacturer due to the extremely dangerous nature of the subject. The fact you are asking an online forum suggests lack of knowledge regarding the hose selection may only be one of your problems (due to the subject in question I am erring on the side of caution in this case and assuming the levels are high enough to potentially explode).

I think this is THE most dangerous question every asked on CR4. Ever.

A nitroglycerin transfer hose.

But honestly. I'd think the valves, pressure, rate of transfer etc. Would be more of the issue.

I'm only guessing that a 2" hose transferring 1gph by gravity to a side by side tank would be different than a 1/4" line under high pressure pumped a long distance.

How's about stopping what you're doing (NOW), sitting down with a fresh cup of coffee, pad & pen, and reconsidering your career options - one not involving your being reduced to a cloud of vapour tossed to the Four Winds?

Sound like a plan? Surely your paycheck isn't worth the risk of what you're doing now.

Maybe the OP has a server case of Anal fissures, a tube of nitroglycerine isn't enough so he's going all out using a tank full of Nitro and needs to know which type of hose to use for his enema? He does seem to be pretty cracked, huh?

From the stupid replies it looks like he is dealing with school kids.

Nitroglycerin is a vasodilator, a medicine that opens blood vessels to improve blood flow. It is used to treat angina symptoms.

You need a medical grade tubing if this is indeed for medicinal purposes. Antibacterial.

No, probably not 'school kids'.

Angina is uncommon among children, i.e. people of the age one would usually consider 'school kids'.

Also, 'school kids' do not often work with energetic materials (not for long at least) and when they do, nitroglycerin would still be uncommon as the route to obtaining certain organic peroxides as an alternative would be far easier.

.

By the way, it kind of defeats the purpose of posting anonymously (whatever that might be) when you identify yourself as the OP by claiming the question in first person as in post #28.

You are assuming facts that were not presented. Also even if you are correct in your assumption, a life saving drug manufacturer that tries to get manufacturing insights from an anonymous forum should fail in getting help before they kill somebody.

Which part of your original post ...

"To transfer nitroglycerine through the höse to the tank, what is the type of höse should I use like EPDM rubber, FKKM(Perflorocarbon) elastomer, silicone based rubber etc.,which is suitable as mechanically, termally, resistive, conductive, flexible."

... indicates the nitroglycerine of which you speak, Mr. Anonymous Syagmur, is for medical use?

As far anyone knows, you could be some idiot making this stuff in your kitchen sink. Even so, you've said nothing to suggest this material is not in its pure form. Its end use - whether medical or not - doesn't change the fact that nitroglycerine is one of the most powerful chemical explosives known.

You said 'nitroglycerine,' not 'medical nitroglycerine,' not 'diluted nitroglycerine', just 'nitroglycerine,' nitroglycerine that you want to pump through a hose. For what purpose? You didn't say. For all we know, you could be some bluddy terrorist trying to build a bomb, or some git who doesn't know any better, preparing to remove himself from the gene pool and maybe taking some innocents with him.

And now you're here, supposedly anonymously, calling everyone 'children.' One foolish enough to consult anonymous forums for medical manufacturing advice and who isn't even clever enough to conceal his identity whilst attempting to post as a third party. Way to go, Einstein.

An apprenticeship in a dynamite factory might be a good way to learn about safe handling of nitroglycerin. (Or not .)

Temperature extremes should be easily avoidable, but shocks or any sudden movements may take special care to prevent. Use smooth bends rather than sharp elbows in piping, for instance. Use only slow-closing valves to avoid hydraulic hammer. Don't let the fluid splash or fall into containers; introduce it tangentially to surfaces. Etc. etc.

Discuss all of this with entities that handle nitro on a regular basis. Seek out any published standards for such operations. This is a specialty, and there are people who know how to do it.

Where is Lyn when we need him? I'm CERTAIN all of us would welcome Lyn's usual acerbic answer to a question this (unquestionably) stupid! Even if the question IS about medicinal quantities of medicinal Nitro, it is still a stupid question, if only because it is about such a small set of options, WITHIN such a dangerously WIDE set of circumstances, that it begs to be answered with "Gallows Humor", absent any initial clarifiers.

So, Anonymous Poster, you stupid internet troll, you, grow a spine, or get lost. And, Syagmur, please recognize that we don't intentionally antagonize posters who are clearly serious and thoughtful about their posts, we don't intentionally antagonize those whose first language may not immediately add clarity to thinking and expression in what is undoubtedly OUR first (and at least in my case, only) language, and we ARE interested in helping to solve, or at least suggest solutions to, intriguing engineering questions. But we won't touch what looks like a solution to a problem which either a)doesn't even bother to consider important issues of public liability and endangerment, or b)aids terrorist or terroristic behaviour.

So, restate, or not. But don't bother to "unload" on us. We've been unloaded on by bosses who had the ability, or thought they did, to fire us for not giving intelligent answers to stupid questions. And most of us are retired, and ALL of us are volunteers. So, do your worst. Or not. But restating might get you a useful answer. Unloading won't.

Note, I know you didn't unload. Just saying, don't bother, is all.
