The diagram does not appear to represent a pump that uses seal water. The magnetic coupling črosses a welded barrier separating the motor fron the pump. There might be fluid usec for cooling, but there isn't any needed to seal a shaft for what is represented in the diagram.

I wonder about that too. I have often seen low-temperature oil used as a sealing fluid in ammonia pumps, but water seems odd. (Unless maybe used to pressurize the area above the cable seal gland [??]). Other items in the drawing also remain unexplained.

This is an in column (in tank) magnetically coupled submerged pump and will have no seal or "seal water leak off".

Ebara makes a multistage API 610 pump suitable as an ammonia feed pump, but these are usually fitted with API Plan 53 seal systems, so again no seal water.

Only other possibility I see is that this is an old installation with a single seal with a water quench - if so, not a great place to work.

What do the operator/ maintenance manuals have to say about it?

We need more information like, what is the model number of this pump? Ebara makes several different types of pumps.

I, myself would not play with anything until I know.

If and when in doubt, call Ebara,

Middle East & Africa office 44-1372-739-666

Asian office 81 (3)6275-5732

The original equipment manufacturer's Technical Helpline should always be the first source of information.

  1. Obtain the model and serial number of the pump
  2. Call Ebara customer service and ask them several questions about this pump, including the one you posed to this forum.
  3. Standby for their answers in response to your questions.
  4. Be prepared to restore the pump to new conditions based on what you are telling us here.

That should just about sum up what Ebara folks will recommend.
