There's no such thing, chief. There are metal detectors but none that can tell you if it's gold or not.

I dunno, some women seem to be able to detect it!

No, that just has to do with heightened senses. They can spot gold from distances and even from behind the counter. The same goes for diamonds. They can also smell a bargain, and hear the sounds of a sale going on.

Then there's the eye behind the head where they use if for naughty little children.

I know of a gold detector but doubt if a circuit would ever be available.

They called it a pan (actually more like a wok).

You have to get the gold bearing rock into a powder form. put it in the pan with water and start moving the pan in circular motions and spill off some water and soil.

The gold is heavier and will tend to stay at the bottom.

eventually when the pan is empty you know you were moving the pan too fast and you will have to start all over again.

The main requirement is gold bearing rock.

My ex-wife was a gold detector. You could put a chain around her wrist and in a few days she'd tell you if it wasn't gold.

Hey! Dousing. I wonder if anyone has anything to say about that. It's real you know. Saw it with my own eyes.

That is proof positive of it's being an effective means to locate unseen features below ground. Yup, dousing.

A Company in Mass makes a hand held x-ray unit that will identify metals and materials the unit you would want to use is the INNOV-X Classic. Check them out on the internet or call them at 1-781-938-5005. You would have to get the precious metal unit for gold detection. This unit can also tell the percent of alloys.

Is this what you are talkimg about -- I don't think you can detect gold - maybe you can do an analysis of ore but not detect the presence of gold in the ground or streams --- get real

Intek

I was under the impression you wanted to detect gold in a rock or ore. Not walking around in the mountains and checking the surface of the ground to locate a seam or a pocket in the mountain side. This device can identify different materials in the field instead of having to send the ore to the lab to be analysed. But you still have to get the ore out of the ground and check it. I know of no long range detector that you can use to find a seam underground at great depths.

Holy crap. Is that what we are looking for? Something I can stick in the ground to find the mother lode while a clamber about in Bermuda shorts and sip iced tea?

But me down for 2.

I would also like a bucket of anti-matter, a virginal prostitute and 50 bucks. American of course. The money. I don't care where the rest comes from.

Re: gold detector

I was working on a DIY metal detector a while back. In my research I found that there are new technologies (actually refined) to increase the probability of finding gold or the ability to discern metals. There are easy to find circuit diagrams for general detectors as well as some more advanced given you have the tuning capabilities available.

This is a favorite link of mine for metal detecting as a hobby. As for gold itself; spend some time in detecting forums (there are a lot) and you'll get your answer.

I've never heard of a gold detector, except that it might be done by spectrum analysis, in which case, you need to have a laser that will cause the gold to become incandescent, and an analyzer to tell you what you have.

just an idea
