IR LASER range finder

09/01/2007 10:54 AM

Friends,

I will like to scan and detect the moving objects and distance of such objects that may also be a person or animal. This I will like to use for my farm house to scan and generate signal in the night for any moving object detected in 100m from the mid point.

I will like to have three things in it. Detection of moving object, range finding data, and flash digital image.

Let us see the type of technology that may be possible to be used for the purpose. I can look for many types of ideas to explore.

I have a sensor using a thermopile detector that, with proper lensing, can view a reasonably small field of view at such a distance. You could scan and detect changes in the IR profile but I don't know about range finding. Perhaps if you use two devices with triangulation you could track a 2D profile. I am not sure what you mean by flash digital image.

Beam interruption looks much simpler so I will place IR beam sources and sensors at multiple locations. I do require distance sensors to localize the presence of an intruder.

Flash light camera is to record the event for evidence. Camera will point to where the intruder is present and will record the activities.

Check a high end hunting supplier such as Cabela's - such things are available off-the-shelf. (In Tesas we use them for deer surveys and such.) Why re-invent the wheel? That's a scientist's job. we're engineers - se put the wheel to work!

Yes, I am looking for fitting devices. Yet to find proper types.

get a video camera that sees IR, then a memory mapped motion detector that watches pixels and set the minimum change you want to record.

It will then watch the field of view and tape any thing that moves. If you want to see ants move, set it to operate on very few pixels. for snakes, coons, people, set accordingly.

These are off the shelf surveillance company items

Yes, I have a high resolution video camera for image capturing. This one will not be used for image analysis and image recognition but just to catch few good snaps for visual record.

IR beam is a much better idea. I am thinking to place few mirrors to reflect beam back at the source and line of path interruption can be monitored. IR Mirrors going to be a probpem in this case. I may have to mount many of them. I can have IR LASER source.

Hi i am Rishi,if i understand your need is that you are going to make a PIR type sensor with long range and also have the capability of mordern appache (or Mi-35)hellicopters of image sensing and processing ,i have no idea of image processing but i have a good knowledge of IR SENSORS AND THERE WORKING, By modulating the IR beam you obtain the desired range but i am not sure whether it reflects the sufficient amount of IR radiation back for detecting purpose,I think we need very low noise sensors for that purpose,I also suggest that it is much better if you use ultrasonic source and detector for this purpose or some kind of thermal sensors as most of the movement are caused by living things and hence act as a source of heat.....
