Spooky Texting

12/11/2017 2:27 PM

I sent my wife a text. I got a reply, but it said "can't talk not, I'm driving, will call you later." When I got home she said she hadn't replied, but her phone showed the text I had received. Where did that strange text come from?

Big brother nanny government "we know better than you" attitude . . .

. . . there is probably a setting on the phone that automatically detects movement and autosends a reply. While I firmly believe in safety, I bristle at the thought that others have already made that decision for me.

What is interesting that this apparently is the default.

If it's illegal to text and drive and your phone automatically sends a text when you receive one, you might have some 'splainin' to do if a cop pulls you over and reads your messages. Just sayin'.

My car does that when it's paired to my phone. It disarms texting and routes phone calls to the hands free system in the car. When someone texts, it sends the canned message.

My phone (Android) does the same thing. I had to disable the "I'm driving now" sensor.

Somehow the driving feature (Do Not Disturb feature) has been activated, probably through an OS update. You can disable it in settings in Android under Sounds and Vibration. The following is for Apple

Turn it on and off in Control Center

You can let Do Not Disturb while driving turn on automatically, or you can add it to Control Center for convenient manual access:

  1. Go to Settings > Control Center > Customize Controls.
  2. Tap next to Do Not Disturb While Driving.

Now you can swipe up from the bottom of your screen and tap to turn the feature on or off.

But she wasn't driving. In fact her phone was in her purse and it wasn't moved until I got home. And I've had this happen with my brother too. He got a text from me that mentioned family names...but I never sent it. All our phones are Android.

Don't answer if someone asks if you were driving. It is highly illegal in many states to text and drive. OOPs!

Based on the syntax, I expect your reply came from either Thailand or the Philippines.

I think the apps often fail to turn off after the drive is over. I used to have to turn my driver app on/off manually.

None of us have a driver app, unless it is hidden somewhere in settings. I searched my phone...guess I'll call the provider next and see what they say.

I tried that, but wifey still calls me back using land line. She was in rare form last night. I finally had to go sleep in the "dog" house that is actually where only one dog and two cats stay, thus by majority it was the "cat" house.

At least the equipment is still in use for its original purpose. Many of the threads on CR4 suggest that the Original Poster of those threads has no inkling of its utility in obtaining information by making such a 20th-century thing as a simple telephone call.

When is the next one-way service to Mars and where can one buy tickets over the phone (rhetorical question - NNTR)?

Re: Spooky Texting

I got a text about a year ago from a phone number I didn't recognize asking about what to do about a clogged drain issue.

I asked who is this, I don't recognize her phone number.

The Reply was "I'M YOUR SISTER"... well, that sounded like her (if a text could speak ),

So I proceeded to tell here, It's probally a hair ball.

  1. first I told her to buy extra Strength Draino...
  2. If that didn't work, to buy a little plastic drain snake at the hardware store,... their pocket change, and try to get the hairball out if that didn't work.
  3. If that didn't work, I told her how to disconnect the trap underneath her sink.
  4. And last resort, to call the plumber.

1/2 hour later, she thanked me, the Draino worked.

Then about a week and a half later, I get a text from the same number, and she's asking if I wanted to going with her to buy mom a new mailbox for her birthday....

Now, since my mom past away years prior... I texted back, I'm afraid you got the wrong number...

She texted back 'Sorry'

I then text back, "that's ok,... because I only do clogged drains...."

So if this were your sister, and the clog was a hairball, did she cough it up?

By the way, did I mention you made it sound like your sister is a cat?

So, did you get back in touch with the mystery drain sister, and hook-up?

Matter of fact,.. at Halloween she was.

No, but I did tell my real sister though, we all around (both my real sister and my CNN Sister) had a good laugh... I'm just glad my CNN sister didn't ask for money....

There was a thread about a year ago when someone recommended the use of forceps

for holding nuts in really awkward places. I thought those have got to be useful for all sorts of things, so I bought some.

The first thing I used them for was pulling hair out of a blocked drain: absolutely ideal. I've used them for several other things since; well worth the ~$10.

That is no nut holder. I strongly recommend against any such practice!

Handy tool, though when you need fine control in a tight place.
