Best Way To Attach Pressed Board Top

01/25/2018 2:08 PM

I recently purchased this tilting adjustable height couch table....but there are a few problems with it...first, the top is supposed to attach to the crossbar with 2 clamps...

The clamps are 25mm and the bar is 32.5mm...

I have got a partial refund and ordered some new clamps...

4 ea 1 1/4" ....but the holes don't match and I ordered 4 just in case... so the question is, this tabletop is probably pressed board with melamine type coating and the original holes have inserts....What would you use to attach the top to the bar, bearing in mind that the angle of incline for the top must be adjustable...

The top is 15mm thick...

I have used these before (or something very close) in repairing pressboard furniture, they work well.

Looks a lot better then the drill all the way through, bolt, nut, and fender washer method.

Agree.

This is a slightly different style, intended to drive flush and stop at the surface.

Going to need care to not drill thru the top... might have to select the closest size and grind off a little bit.

A search for furniture assembly parts, furniture fasteners... maybe check the Ikea parts books?

I used an adjustable drill stop to make sure I didn't drill all the way through. I also put a dab of wood glue in with each one.

I'd go with one of the threaded inserts, after applying a healthy dose of epoxy to the holes. For insurance against filling the ID of the insert with epoxy put some lubricant on the matching screws and screw them into the insert and leave them till the epoxy cures.

Kinda what Del said.

Tricky...
There are plenty of screws designed for that material but you don't have much depth to play with.
I'd be tempted to drill a pilot hole, screw in a suitable screw, but without tightening it too much. Then remove the screw and drip in a good quantity of low viscosity cyanoacrylate glue (superglue) to stabilize and bind the particle board..
Alternatively, maybe use epoxy to glue in studs and then use nuts and washers to tighten down the fittings.
A further alternative, Glue a sheet of good quality 1/2" ply to the underside to give you more depth to screw into... this may actually be the best and simplest option.
Best to try out on some similar scrap material first if possible.
Good luck
Del
PS, if this doesn't get a GA... I send the boys round

You can keep the cat boys in the backyard, now.

He could use the original holes, add some aluminum strap pieces about 3 mm thickness, by 3 cm width, and have countersunk screws on the sides of the straps facing the table top underside.

That makes customization possible without drilling into the top at all.

or use inserts.

Have you seen this guy's "boys" (the cat boys)? I would not want to meet them in a dark alley way.

Improving cr@p products, eh?

Bear in mind that home-brew adjustments to any product could make any warranty void and any potential refund unavailable.

<...partial refund...> is not an option here - a full refund on the basis of unsuitability for purpose is always the remedy.

Well, we all know the customer isn't always right.

However, I never forget that the customer IS always the customer.

And I agree, entire purchase price should have been refunded, or a replacement item sent, or... However, a concession was made that satisfied the customer, so all is well.

Re: Best way to attach pressed board top

I could have got a full refund by returning the stand...but it is just the right size and style, and also very light weight....and I asked him just to send the proper clamps and I would be happy....obviously he does not have the proper size clamps so a replacement would be unhelpful...besides with the wheels on it it's too high to fit under the couch, so they had to be removed, and I bought some sliders to replace them...It's not a question can I make it work, it's just which methods I'm going to use...

As I said, you are the customer and you get to decide when you are satisfied. You are always the customer, whether you are right or not. In this case the 'Must Be' attribute of the Kano Model wasn't fulfilled, you are most assuredly right in not being happy.

If the supplier/mfgr did what they could, and you are happy with the end deal, then all is well. This isn't too big of a deal for you, you seem a pretty capable guy, and you have realistic expectations.

This was the guy selling this, or the guy making them that does not have the correct hardware? My guess is the seller, OK, I see that now.

Maybe the safest way is to make a couple of adaptor plates out of say 10mm x25mm Aluminium/aluminum bar that you can then fix to the table top using the existing mounting points. You could likely still use one hole for both the plate and the new saddle, with the other screw countersunk under the saddle and a threaded hole further out on the plate to take the longer saddle.

Like minded with you today, sorry I posted mine before I read your previously posted suggestion. It must be good if both of us were thinking the same thing.

Re: Best way to attach pressed board top

The way I would do it would be to use a 5/8" dia forstner bit ( a bit that leaves a flat bottom hole) and drill to a depth, about 7/16" deep. I would then cut off some 5/8" wood dowels and glue them into the holes. Space them to match the center to center hole distance of the new clamps. After the glue has set, locate the holes over the dowels and use sheet metal screws to attach the clamps to the dowels being careful not to use a screw that is too long. The board is probably MDF or particle board, so threaded inserts may not grip well.
