Flu Vaccine/Shot...Love it or Leave it?

01/26/2018 10:07 AM

I'm not going to start with my opinion on the subject.

Now I'm hearing about the importance of our dogs getting a flu shot.

important to who?

Important to your dogs: dogs have died from canine flu. Important to your vet, so they can prevent transmission at the vet hospital.

My vet had to shut down for three weeks a couple of years ago and undergo multiple sterilization procedures after an infected dog was treated. At the time the flu was mostly in the South (as I remember), and this dog had gone on a winter vacation with his family. Now every dog that goes to daycare or the boarding kennel has to have a current flu shot.

AKC is vigilant about preventing flu transmission/outbreaks at shows and performance events (obedience, agility, field trials etc.). I get periodic updates only because i've been an officer in my breed club. Definitely a disease to take seriously.

It's not just the flu vaccine for pets. Anti-vaxxers are lobbying against ANY vaccine for your dog. Because, science.

"Anti-vaxxers" are radical idiots.

Our dogs were never around other dogs.

If our vet had told my wife they needed a flu vaccine shot, I would have been taking them to get the shots every year.

Canine flu might well be geographically limited at least for now -- to the East Coast. Sort of like Lyme disease used to be. I'd never heard of it until my vet closed down. If the virus hasn't spread to Texas there's no reason to vaccinate, right?

I'm in favor of minimal vaccination and only vaccinating when necessary. For example, immunity from a rabies vaccine can last longer than 3 years. In some states (not NY), it's acceptable to titrate for immunity level and only revaccinate when the level dips below some defined point.

And I'd never give a dog more than one vaccine a day.

Two things:

1. We don't have dogs any more.

2. I don't live in Texas. We fly over it on the way to the farm in Ark.

OT

Me brother has 12 +- dogs, depending on how many are abandoned near their property. They adopt them, all. They mostly treat their dogs themselves. When my br. takes them for walks they all follow him single file, depending on their rank in the pack.

Yeah, you fly over it. Texas still loves you brother. If my vet, a Dr. Clary, here in Lubbock tells me, get the vaccination (for the dogs), you can bet I will have him vaccinate them. He is the best, ever vet I have known.

Question: can anti-vaxxes also join the Flat Earth Society? I wish they would go join the Darwin Awards Trials.

If they get between me and my dogs, they would prefer hell when it is over. Vikings ain't got nothing on me when I am in protect mode, be it dogs, cats, birds, or the wifey.

I told her they other day, "I would walk through hell on Sunday to keep you safe with me," Wifey: " Oh yeah, what are you gonna do the other six days?"

I was basically silent, and floored.

We do all our own shots for the dogs, except Rabies. We have the flu vaccine on hand but will not give it unless our vet says they have seen any instance of it in our state. Best to ask you vet for their advise. Having been a breeder of dogs we were required by the associations we belonged to to keep up with many vaccines and tests that not everyone does.

I got the flu once about 5 years ago. Kicked in right after Christmas and let up only a couple of days into the new year. Worst I've ever felt for that long a stretch.

I've made sure to get the flu shot every year since.

Yes, and apparently, this year's bug is a mean lil' rascal, and the flu vaccine is not a good simulant of it, thus this bug gets around our perimeter.

Let's not forget that influenza in one form or another has been 4 of the 10 great pandemics in recorded medical history. (Well at least in that link. I wonder why small pox isn't on that list. Maybe the high mortality rate made small pox outbreaks as multiple, localized epidemics.)[I can't believe I implied something good about small pox.] A century ago the 1918 influenza pandemic took more lives than all of WW1.

If enough ill educated, uninformed fanatical followers of current politicians have their way, we might see smallpox, polio and flu much more.

Then, that might just thin the herd, so it may be a good, self limiting mechanism for stupid.

No Lyn, we already know "you" can't fix stupid.

You can't get some people off their old saw either.

Still others will swallow nearly anything the media tells them. Gullibility is the bane of civilization, and so it the lack or morality. You can figure out who I am referring to that seems to have not just paucity of morals, but a complete and total lack.

No, I can't figure out most of what you say. We are worlds apart in so many ways.

By, "the media" I assume that you don't include any of your tried and true media sources in that disparagement.

I think most people in the US under 50 have not received a smallpox vaccine and most people over 50 have not had a booster within the time specified to maintain resistance. To smallpox we are once again naked to epidemic.

That's all for now. I'm off to find some cows to milk. Come on, cowpox!

When I had dogs I got them vaccinated. Huge mistake! They both became autistic and stopped talking to me.

Ok - I know autism is no joking matter. I have a neice who is 30 years old and has been autustic all of her life. But it had NOTHING to do with vaccines. That idea has been soundly debunked. My brother would love to punch anti-vaxxer Jenny McCarthy in the face.

See these links here concerning vaccination as a causative factor for autism:

http://thefreethoughtproject.com/cdc-forced-release-documents-showing-knew-vaccine-preservative-autism/

https://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2011/08/13/new-scientific-review-shows-vaccines-and-autism-are-linked.aspx

And here we have evidence of money affecting what doctors say (there is a lot of money involved):

http://www.vocativ.com/212533/big-tobacco-doctors/index.html

Medical reports showed that smoking was harmful back in the 1920's but there were cover-ups so it wasn't until January 1, 1966 that a warning was finally put on packs of cigarettes!

Re: Flu Vaccine/Shot...Love it or Leave it?

I expected NPR to be persuasive. It wasn't. It only confirmed the agenda set fourth by the medical practitioners.

I'm certainly not anti-vax, but I don't prescribe to every potion recommended.

I'm interested in the opinions of people living in places outside the US where the flu shot is not pushed, or only pushed for the elderly.

In my experience, I've seen sickly people suffer the flu and healthy people shrug it off. I've also witnessed healthy people come down with terrible sickness after getting the flu shot.

I've been with family members during doctors visits and have been astonished by the level of pressure laid on by physicians in favor of the flu shot.

A kind 'thanks but no thanks' is responded to with sneering and repulsive behavior the likes of which I would only expect from L.

Put it this way. When I lived with people that didn't care about what or how many medications they took(including flu shot)... what food they consumed in whatever proportions they desired... with no end to the work/party work/party cycle. Sickness was the norm.

Since getting away from the madness I haven't had so much as a headache much less the flu in many years.

My long lived pooch has had an identical experience.

Nobody was called a radical idiot. That's something reserved for lawyers, tweens and ...people who don't like to hear anyone's opinion.

Having had more than one friend who suffered from polio when I was a child, I definitely appreciate the concept of vaccination. As I recall, I had 31 injections of various kinds before being allowed to serve overseas in the Peace Corps, and at least a hundred since then (that would only be ≈2 a year, and does not include ≈200 allergy injections, ending some time in the '80s).

But, I have had flu shots a number of times, and had quite a few years without. My experience has been worse those years that I did get the shot than those years I did not, with one exception a few years back, when I spent New Years Eve in Hawaii and came home with the flu. I think it's been about 5 years since my last flu shot, and my one case about a month ago made me decide to avoid attending a public meeting, but otherwise had little affect on my activities at home.

Sounds like you've had a pretty typical experience ..and a lot of shots!..

I've had what's required of me to attend schools etc., but everything else has been a la carte for injuries / infections of a known cause.

As much as humankind have been benefited from antibiotics and vaccines etc. I have also know people who's lives have been damaged from medication.

Bringing this topic up is important. I'm trying to educate myself in the face of the media blitz and I trust the insight this forum is capable of providing.

Then don't get a flu shot. The vaccine is last years and is marginally effective, I've heard.

I've never has a flu shot in 70 years. I have rarely had the flu. Maybe I'm just too mean.

When they come up with a multi-strain flu shot that works, I'll be getting in line.

Overall, I see vaccination as one of the genuine successes in medicine. Other medicines, not so much. Not at all really. I haven't taken a prescription or OTC pharmaceutical drug for close to 20 years now - not even an antibiotic. So I am pretty serious about my dislike of drugs. Vaccines though, I've always had whatever is recommended, a bunch of travel related ones, and will do the same on the next occasion.

When we travel, we leave our dogs, at the keenel, were it's required to have its normal shots, if flu is one of them, then they get it.

Since we lost one (Dachshund) last December, due to a heart mumur 3 days after its scheduled shots, (my opinion is the worming can be stressful) whether it was cause by the shots or not, who knows.

We do take the remaining one to a doggie daycare to play with others since then to play with other dogs, because he would visit his 'brother's' grave in the back yard when ever we left him out.

But we do spend a lot on the health of the dogs. with its the normal shots, doggy daycare or chiropractors... we do like to see our dogs healthy and active, which makes them happy.
