Is It Gold Plated, or Solid?

01/26/2018 10:47 PM

No words needed.

Air Force One's new refrigerators cost $24 million

The Boeing Co., Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, has been awarded a $23,657,671 contract for engineering support services for VC-25A G12/G13 chillers, including prototype design, manufacture/procurement, installation, and the testing of one prototype, consisting of both Group A and Group B equipment. The Air Force requires that the current air chillers in the G12 and G13 galleys be modified with new cold food stowage to improve reliability and maintainability. Work will be performed in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; San Antonio, Texas; and various other locations, with an expected completion date of Oct. 30, 2019. This award is the result of a sole-source acquisition. Fiscal 2017 procurement funds in the amount of $23,657,671 are being obligated at the time of award. Air Force Life Cycle Management Center, Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma, is the contracting activity (FA8106-17-D-0002/FA8106-18-F-1002).

You mean this question....

Harump. Where did you hear that AF1 was going to be replaced with new planes?

I heard it when Trump canceled the order because of the costs and renegotiated.

You're still avoiding to answer my questions, even the rhetorical questions.

Stop being such a snowflake...

OOPS! I said Golden Hammer, but I meant Golden Fleece. I just can't get anything right.

Can we quote you on that?

As I recall from time to time there have been references to golden fleece, golden hammers and golden toilet seats....Usually attributed to those who also have golden parachutes.

I remember a story from 2001-2002 when USAF B2 bombers started flying missions from Missouri to Afghanistan, then on to Diego Garcia for service, and then back to Missouri. it was something like 70 hours flight time with two crew. Since most of the flight was on auto pilot, one of the pilots bought a $10 folding beach chair at Walmart so they could take turns sleeping during the flight. The AF thought that was a great idea, and began outfitting the entire fleet with beach chairs at a cost of $160,000 a piece.

The moral of the story is the DoD can't bury a dead cat for under a $1M.

And word has it, the Government is hiding the 'Ark of the Conveyance' in plain sight.

Which also explains the 24 million.

  1. We seem to have gotten off track and failed to answer the question asked in the OP.

Gold plated or solid?

Presumably 'solid' was intended to ask 'solid gold.

Spot price of gold should rule out the units being solid gold. At current spot price, the contract price could only buy a little under 550 kg of gold...just a little over 28 liters of gold. Almost certainly far too little to construct the contracted units.

Maybe plated.

"We?"

This is your first post to this thread. How can you say, "We" since you have not participated until now?

Should you not have said, "you?"

Why so divisive?

'We' as in the cr4 community who had read the original post.

I was reading and had until that point failed to respond to the question asked, just as everyone else who had read the question had failed to respond thus far. Ergo 'we'.

Not divisive. Simply pointing out my observation, as you are a stickler for detail.

The original question is/was rhetorical, ref. the Golden Fleece Award (which I mistakenly referred to as the Golden Hammer Award) and does not require a direct response since we all know that, except as a very thin plating material for some sliding electrical contacts, gold is far too heavy and soft for most aircraft uses and the question was more related to the high (I thought) cost of the retrofit.

Thanks for your response.

Since YOU want to keep hammering on about this, to be technically correct, there is no evidence or mention of any gold being used in the project (unless it is assumed to be present in the microprocessor or control chips in the electronics). (Note YOU is bolded and italicized to indicate that it is YOU and just YOU as opposed to "we" or "us". This is not to be confused with "us" and "them" or "they". (Everybody knows who "they" are. "They" need no address.))

Thank you. I'm looking forward to becoming part of the group. May we (hope that's not too presumptive/early) have many invigorating discussions.
