Hamming distance

09/07/2007 11:21 PM

Hi every one!

Can any pl. answer the following questions:

1. Generic equation for hamming distance.

2. Are there any standards for hamming distance like IEEE, CENELEC defined..

Thanks and regards,

Raghava

Is this "Hamming" as in Ham Radio or as in "Ham" from "Pork" products, as in "Stupid beginner" or what??

Sorry to be so obtuse.....

Isn't the English language wonderful? ( and I bet I forgot a few other instances of Ham!!!)

As far as I can tell, you're the only one who's stooping here, Mr. Germany.

There a lot of barriers

Age. Level of education, language ,amateur or professor ,etc

So you are taking to the all world, not to the next door electronic engineer

The Hamming distance defines the distance between two subsets A and B of set E. It is simply the absolute value of the sum of the distances between corresponding elements of A and B, respectively. The Hamming distance is characterized by non-negativity, symmetry, and transitivity. A relative Hamming distance is as above, divided by the cardinality of E.

There are other measures of distance between sets, as well.

Are you referring to mathematical set theory? It's been a long time since I studied that, and I have forgotten lots of things, but I fail to understand the meaning of 'distance' between subsets. Please elucidate!

This is new to me and I thought that Andy Germany was hamming it up. Yes English, so exact and so obtuse at the same. maybe some of our math gurus can help.

Google of hamming the first two entries come up Richard Wesley Hamming and Hamming error free codes.

If you have a ham radio licences you could note the location of contacts and work out the distances yourselves.

The distance depend on the frequency. Some do not reflect and therefore needs almost line of sight. you could use a GIS program for distances.

Reflecting waves depend on a lot of varying factors (on a per minute basis).

I don't think the question has much to do with Ham Radio, generally.

Hamming distance has practical applications in a number of fields including that of digital signal processing. Hamming distance, for example, can be used as a cost measure in the optimization of the sequencing of MAC operations in low power DSP designs to minimize the total actively-switched capacitance of a bus. Perhaps if you described your application and, more specifically, why you're interested in knowing about Hamming distance, others on this forum could help you in much more specific, targeted way. It is often the case that when you have a specific application in hand, you can gain understanding from that first and then generalize it to its fundamental principles and applications later. If your interest is purely theoretical, I would direct you to a number of mathematics texts which discuss this subject more generally. It all depends on which end of the river into which you would prefer to wade first, yes?
