Cell Phone Time Is Always Wrong. Any Ideas?

02/09/2018 6:15 AM

I've finally decided to ask the experts on what can be done about my cell phone. The time is always 7 minutes fast on my phone. I've reset it and it holds the correct time, but when I'm not looking, it jumps ahead again. I use AT&T for cell service and I think they're sending some sort of synchronizing signal. However, we also have U-Verse and the time is accurate on this service.

The phone is an LG - the old Goldstar company. Personally, I hate the phone and I wouldn't be surprised if the automatic time change is coming from them, but I don't think they're connecting to my phone, since they're not my carrier.

I also have an Alcatel cell phone and when I set the time on the phone, it doesn't change. This leads me to believe that it's not AT&T doing this, but if that's true, how can LG control the clock on my phone?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Is it me, or does Steve Miller have a weak voice? When I was a kid, I liked his music, but when I listen to him now, I notice his voice isn't very good. Much better than mine, but I'm not a professional, by any means!

Are you sure you didn't download and install the "7 minutes from the future app"?

I leave all our phones on autoset. The Alacatel and iPhones work fine, but this LG wants to jump 7 minutes ahead. I can't figure out why the LG doesn't function like the other phones.

I could take it off autoset, but I like consistency. All our other phones are on autoset, so I'd have to remember to reset the LG and it would be one extra thing my brain would have to remember. This may sound crazy, but I'd rather get rid of the LG and get another phone that works right.

Look on the bright side. You'll always be 7 minutes early for meetings.

I'll sell you my LG, then you're only 3 minutes from your goal!

I had a similar issue. Actually my wife did. I have a Samsung Galaxy S6. She has a Samsung Galaxy Note 5. We are on the same US Cellular plan along with our two teenage sons.

Her phone was always about 4 minutes fast compared to the rest of us. When we would reset the time, it would be good for a day or so then back to about 4 minutes fast. After trying a lot of things, I finally uninstalled a weather app she had installed and the issue went away. I don't remember the name of the app but, apparently it was updating the time on her phone.

Edit: After thing about it, the models I stated for our phones may be incorrect. It was several years ago and we may have had older models at the time.

That's a good idea. There may be two autoset clocks working and one sets the clock 7 minutes ahead.

Are you allowing the network to autoset the time?

Go to "settings"... System...."Date & Time"...."Automatic date & time"

Then on my phone you can choose between <Network time> , <GPS time> or <off>

Yes, I have the autoset function on. I have the autoset working on my Alcatel and our iPhones and they don't have this problem. This is what's leading me to believe that it's an LG specific problem, not an AT&T issue.

Troy mentioned that there may be other software with an autoset function that may be causing the phone to jump ahead 7 minutes. If it were an hour, I could trace it to a time zone issue, but why 7 minutes? Another piece of software shouldn't want to speed up time 7 minutes, unless it's that "jump ahead 7 minute" app that someone mentioned!

I have both the LG and Alacatel phones set to auto update. Same as the iPhones we have. The LG is the only one that autosets to 7 minutes early.

Does anyone have an LG phone with AT&T that has this problem? Why would the other phones work fine, while the LG has problems?

This gives me another reason to throw the phone out the car window!

At least you'll be able to see the time fly for a bit.

I highly doubt it is any cell phone service provider that is about seven minutes off in their time clock. My WAG is that one of the WiFi network switches you frequent is off by this amount and that somewhere in your phone setting is a switch for selecting which system(s) is trusted enough for time synchronization. I suspect you are set for any service synchronization instead of trusted service.

Hmmm, that's interesting and could be the issue.

If it's a WiFi issue, shouldn't it do the same thing with all our phones. The automatic time change seems to happen when I'm sleeping. The Alcatel and iPhones don't change, but the LG does. Also, the Alcatel is with me almost all the time and the LG is either at home or with me in my office.

Not all phones allow WiFi time as a standard because so many switch clocks are never reset since they are buried in the network. Which ever abandoned clock it is it has slowly drifted from the last time it was set.

I did a Google search on this a while back and it's not only with LG phones. There are a few of us that are having trouble with our phones. I was just wondering if anyone has had this happen to them and what the remedy is.

I ran another Google search a few minutes ago and people are still having trouble with the time jumping ahead. Some by a few minutes at a time, while others have the time jumping ahead by hour(s).

Thanks in advance.

My girlfriends LG phone was jumping an hour off on a regular basis about 4-6 months ago. She has a new phone now and I don't remember the model. I do believe it was an app software issue with one of the game apps she had.

My wife has an LG phone called a Daisy mini flip phone. It's so old, it's not even listed anymore. Her phone is 2 minutes slower than my phone. I have a Casio commando, which is already obsolete, but I like it. When I went down to the Verizon store to inquire about her phone time issue, the salesmen said that old people are always having problems with their phones and the young ones never have a problem.

Er, how about relocating 1.75 degrees of longitude eastwards?

Is it actually a phone or is it really a flux capacitor?

Curious minds want answers...
