Flipping a hamburger is so trivial that I find it hard to conceive it is a reasonable target of automation.

OTOH given the inability of human staff to properly cook a hamburger at some establishments, maybe it is a good idea for them.... Does the flipper know when a burger is done? In some way that a human attendant wasn't able or willing to tell?

After seeing this video, I'm really not impressed.I'd keep that system for cleaning the grill though. The time will come, no doubt and we'll have fully automated beef wellington and sushi, never mind burgers simply stacked and wrapped. Food automation such as this has to start somewhere, but for now, Flippy has a very long way to go! I think John Henry would agree.

You may already be automated.

There are conveyor broilers that cook hamburgers and buns. All you have to do is feed the machine and out comes a cooked burger and a bun (separate conveyors). I'm sure the system could be upgraded to have automatic feed and position the bun at the exit to receive the burger and another machine to drop a piece of cheese and condiments and wrap it. I recently heard of a vending machine that makes a pizza from scratch, bakes it and dispenses it in a matter of minutes. The technology is here; has been for a long time. More sane minds may have realized that putting millions out of work might not be such a good idea.
