Troubleshoot On Central Air Conditioning

05/01/2018 11:08 PM

Hi,

I have a problem with my air conditioning unit:

The trouble is:

1. The compressor runs okay

2. Fan motor not delivering air

3. The tri-resistor on the printed board blown and after replacing it blown again.

4. After testing the fan motor the white wire shorted with brown; white wire open with red; red wire open with brown.

5. The printed board no: 0053--R:R

Please advise the cause of the problem and the parts require replacing.

Need the brand and model number....You say fan is not running? ...is this the condenser fan motor?....have you checked the run capacitor, or is this a multiple speed motor with electronic controller? Have you tried jumping the board if this is the case, and does the motor then run? If so what is the amp draw actual vs the stated FLA on the label?

This is good advice and will check it out and revert on the outcome.

What is jumping the board means and how it is applied, please clarify.

Thanks

The board only controls the speeds according to demand....it's just an elaborate fan relay....jump the power to the high speed momentarily and see if it runs....either you have an open circuit and nothing will happen or you have a short, you want to check with your meter if there is any short to ground first, this should have been already done, if there is a short between windings then the motor will not run properly and/or have abnormal amp draw...If the motor runs at full speed and draws proper amps ~75% fla, then it's the board that's bad, probably....

If you have a winding short to ground then you may have damaged other components in the system, including the board...These are not field repairable...

This is a multi speed motor whose speed is controlled by that "tri-resistor" and its associated circuitry on the PCB.

You have already determined that the motor has failed, and that short circuit has overloaded the tri-resistor and burned it out. At a minimum you need to replace the motor and the tri-resistor, and it's quite possible that the entire PCB has been fried and needs replacement as well.

Thanks I will do that and revert on the outcome. I don't know if the PCB is fried but it looks very clean with only the tri-resistor burnt.

Look forward to communicate further on this problem.

This beggars belief!

A simple telephone call to the equipment manufacturer can solve this problem and provide a slick way to obtaining the replacement parts. So why is bothering CR4 and waiting for answers considered a strategy able to produce a more timely result (rhetorical question - NNTR)?

Sometimes I too can't believe some of the questions asked on CR4.

It reminds me of something that happened while I was an apprentice. I was in the machine shop (1966) and a guy from the factory asked one of the turners if he could make him a new one of these.

It was the wheel spindle off his bicycle! it could be bought for about a shilling (5 new pence)in the local bike repair shop. He had no idea of the amount of work involved.

Best regards, John

The fan motor is shorted out. Replace it.

There's your problem.

....?

I'm pointing right at it!

...??

No, the "tri-resistor" thingamabob exploding is a symptom. It's not the problem.

..???

Careful now, you've almost used up your five free questions.

.????

Did you call the manufacturer?

he should be the first since he is the one who designed it.

anyway, this link can also help:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fyt27D502lc.
