The Engineering of Mars...

09/14/2007 2:00 PM

OK, considering that the reason why Mars is the way it is today because it lost its magnetosphere and was blasted by the deadly solar wind (which drove its atmosphere away), what type of engineering tricks could be used to compensate so that terra-forming would actually be possible?

I haven't heard much lately from the R2 units we sent there, but the community machination now days is there is some form of hydrogen/oxygen based substance beneath the surface.

OK. So what about this... We send robotic boring machines to Mars to excavate tunnels. Then set up initial operations within them. No radiation, we can make it as warm as we want, and provide the mood lighting! Who knows what type of raw materials might turn up in the tunneling process!

My padded cell is quite comfortable. They tricked me about the jacket being 'armless' though.

I think ET's are already scrapping here. Some were supposed to have plotted a landing in russia aboard a meteor, and others shot them down. Probably the same ones that did for Peru. Holy green nasal flashes, it's thread synchronicity !

What fascinates me with google, is that any randomly selected words can be put together and lead to a link. I crap you not, I just tried 'Kris moon' and 'Del moon' ! Hows about "procrastinating pachyderms" ? Yup ! I think google have a place to try this sport, but I can't recall it's name. Ha. ON no, sorry but I do.

Maybe a satelite could provide localized shielding from solar wind? Heat and light could be reflected in from elsewhere. ?

With a whole lot less space junk floating around Mars, we probably could deploy a really large shroud, and put it into synchronous orbit fairly close to the surface - less gravity!

Thanks, the Martian actioncon is priceless...

I like the orbital spacestation/sheild shroud along with the Bio-domed crater, but we would probably need some kind of "space junk" defence mechanism as well. (so we can get some of the military budget & ward off the Women trying to get to Mars)

I think the key is water.

Best to redirect Ice comets to collide with Mars to increase the quantity of water and total mass. If at all possible increase the rotational speed of Mars (shorten the day) to increase its gravity and magnetic signature.

Once the dust has settled, and the comets are melted, The water will reduce the dust storms. The addition of plant life will start to create oxygen. The oxygen will create a viable atmosphere.

Of course we could go underground to escape from the radiation, maybe direct the light down into tunnels with reflectors. They grow stuff indoors under artificial lights very effectively ( it's usually cannabis! )

Yep! I had that same model car in 1980. Me and Emma Peel would drive around for hours talking about John Steeds weird sexual tastes.

OK the show aired briefly in the States. So please explain a few things to me...

  1. Where were the aliens from?
  2. What did they want?
  3. And whatever happened to them?

The show wasn't on the air long enough to answer any of these questions!

Sometimes in the movie world, directors use the name 'Ed Wood' to hid their shame over a bad end result. In Welsh Fiction, Idris 'Jet' Jetson wrote appaling SF books. His moniker is used in a similar fashion. I am related to Francis Bacon, and my middle name is Peter.

You know, you can use the word "bloody" because no one except the English know what you're referring to, and it's been liberally broadcast all over the world without concern. As far as we know, it just sort of means, like "what the hell!"

Very interesting! I can count on the fingers of 5,000 hands the number of times I've heard mothers use fanny as a social and polite (and childish) way of referring to their child's buttocks.

the only fast way to get volatiles to mars is selected comets of the right composition to be brought into grazing orbits where they would break apart and vapourize with little to no surface impact damage. There are certainly water ice comets. Are here O2, N2 and CO2 ice comets? methan comets? There may be. There may be mized comets. Even a non breathable atmosphere would act as a screen for radiation and trap solar heat. With 10% CO2 you may get earthlike temperatures, but you would need to wear an oxygen mask. less CO2 an denough O2 you could walk the surface.

Time frame, it will not start for 150 years or so, as we need to become space capable for this type of thing

OK, I'll bite... What is "me ol' bam-boo" in Limy talk?! Some kind of Cockney rhyming slang that means something private about one's anatomy?

Welll.....the first bit translates as 'my old'. I'm not sure if they considered bamboo a 'grass' back then, or thought of it as 'wood'. I confess to being equally confused, but I think it's chimney related.

'Oh, woul'den it be luvurly' is another strange song quote. I blame Dick van Dyke. He's American isn't he ? Your ball.

Dick had bamboo poles for cleaning chimneys. It rhymes as well, which is nice. His Cockney accent was a little bit iffy though. Gor blimey guv !

Hang on, if he had lots and lots (they screw together those poles) , well he could reach up and up and up......The sky may not be the limit after all !

It doesn't look that hard to me. If the Giraffe meant business it would have a steel rimmed Bowler/Derby/Coke, and a vicious sneer. Possibly leather shorts would look hard, but I don't think it could slap its thighs in the traditional manner- it's hooves would get tangled up.
