Yesterday's fires and explosions of houses in my neighboring community (Lawrence and Andover, Mass) was reported to be caused by the overpressure in the gas distribution lines servicing this area. Of the thousands of residents serviced by these gas lines, about 60 buildings were effected, distributed randomly within the effected area.
I know that between the distribution "mains" and the customer's meter and house lines is a pressure regulator which reduces the line pressure and maintains the low pressure required by the customer's appliances, I assume, regardless of what the supply pressure is, this lower pressure should be maintained constant. Having worked with pneumatic and hydraulic systems, I know how pressure regulators work.
So, how does the regulator fail to maintain a safe pressure in the few instances that occured?
