Refreshed Design for Engineering360

10/10/2018 4:23 PM

Please take a look at Engineering360 and let us know what you think. The old site design might turn up as well as we run the shakedown cruise.

There's still no cast iron bath-breaking going on.

I liked the tabs that used to be across the top of the page. That made it convenient to navigate. I know you can use the pull down menu, but please don't fall into the trap of Microsoftitis where things are changed to make things different, not necessarily better.

Thanks!!

I can't find a link to the CR4 page from the 360 page. All there is a pull down menu for the search feature. I have to hard code the URL in the browser to get to CR4. Once on the CR4 page there is this navigation tree to get back to the 360 home page or the CR4 home page.

I agree - bring back the tabs! The drop-down menu makes sense on the mobile version - where screen area is limited but is unnecessary on a monitor, and adds an extra operation to get back to CR4 home.

Also, when using the links (to new comments or good answers, or to navigate between comments) the new bar hides the top part of the target comment, e.g. after clicking #9 on comment 10 in https://cr4.globalspec.com/thread/123625/Mixing-of-Gases , the result is:

You've probably noticed similar notices on every website you visit these days. The European Union's General Data Protection Regulation, enforceable since May 25, 2018, prompted changes in notification policies. As Merph said, before you weren't told that IEEE GlobalSpec collected info from site visitors. Now you know.

Is there a portal to view analysis of these cookies ?

Users view all types of information, even that which might seem unrelated to complete their projects.

I'm not in the flicking european union so why have I got to have

my browsing dictated by those assholes?

What, you can't discriminate by region and force this junk only

on your members in the bloated eu??

Why do we outside the eu asshole region have to tolerate their

diktats?????

While you were conforming to the diktats of the scum sucking eu

instead of doing something useful to your home users, like making

your site RESPONSIVE!!!!! to mac users running Safari?????

Just tell me what influence do the bloated asshole dictators in the

cesspool known as the eu have to do with a US centric site and why the

hell are you bowing down for them???????

Ridiculous!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm forced to type short lines like this because for years you've never

tried to make your site responsive for macs using Safari and I never

dared to mention it because that was the price i accepted for coming

to such an interesting site but now i see you sucking the hind teat of

the assholes in the eu before bothering to make your site responsive

to users that have nothing to do with the eu dirtbags.

Not only do i lose half the screen horizontally because your site is still not

responsive in the mobile era, with your new eagerness to please a bunch of

bloated no good hypocrites, now i lose anothe half vertically because there's

a new blocking banner at the top of the screen and a new irritating annoying

cookie sign at the bottom of the screen put there in your eagerness to

conform to a heap of a dungpile in a jurisdiction that's as far from the US

in vision as you can get.

Ridiculous.

..."Cookies—what could be wrong with such deliciousness? Well, even a certain monster on Sesame Street is less into gluten these days. Maybe that's because his beloved snack food had its name co-opted back in the 1990s by the little data files that websites use to improve your experience (and track your activity).

Cookies get stored on your computer when you're using a web browser. The cookie gets read by the server on the other end of the connection. Most of the time, cookies are a good thing—without authentication cookies, you'd constantly be entering usernames and passwords as you surf websites, over and over, on every page. Cookies also make it possible for online shopping carts to work without losing all your items before purchase.

But, cookies can also be used to track you. When you visit a site, you may not get a cookie from just the server for that site, but also a tracking cookie from the advertisers on that site—that's called a third-party cookie. Those can be used to look at where you're going whenever you visit a new website—tracking your moves, so to speak. This has long had privacy advocates up in arms, even though cookies typically do not collect any personalized information.

The problem is, blocking or deleting all cookies is almost crippling to your web adventures. But letting every single cookie through compromises your privacy. So what do you do?"...

Cookie control how to....

We hoping to have a better system in place by the end of the year. Of course, this issue has plagued us for years, so it we're unsure of its priority.

That's not too soon.

It would:

  • save Admins unnecessary work , and
  • might do something to improve the Who's Online figures, which have been lower of late than in the past.

Why are you unsure? That should make it top priority.

Yes, you may be facing a problem of orphan code that disappeared with McGaulin, but there is simple logic that would fix this. Don't post first-time contributions until reviewed by a moderator.

I have said similar things before several times.

Just my opinion. Take it for what it's worth...

The captions under the images that describe the news items are either too long or you need to expand the captions to two lines. I hate clicking on an item only to find out that the content is not anything I'm interested in. Though I'm retired, I'm busy, and I hate wasting productive time clicking on an article that I find I'm not interested in and then having to backtrack.

I'm more likely to pursue an article below the images as I have a better idea if it's something I'm remotely interested in.

This isn't a social media site. Graphical appeal here is much less important than accurate and concise navigation.

While I personally agree with you, I would like to point out that if you hover your mouse over the text that appears in the image you can see the complete title without clicking on anything. Saves you a couple of clicks.

Well, that's a good point and is helpful.

But because of other websites' habits of popping up unwanted content when hovering over "stuff", my habit (which will not likely be broken) is to keep my mouse cursor on white space.

We're far from the only site that drops cookies, but you do have the option to turn them off at browser level. SolarEagle posted a link to our Privacy Policy, which has instructions on how to do this. Your IT Dept. probably also can tell you what to do since your employer specifically prohibits cookies.

Per the banner at the bottom of my browser:

"IEEE GlobalSpec websites place cookies on your device to give you the best user experience. By using our websites, you agree to the placement of these cookies. To learn more, read our Privacy Policy." And then only a box to Accept & Close.

That does not align with your statement above saying "...but you do have the option to turn them off at browser level."

They're allowed to place them, but you are allowed to remove them.....You just need to make the settings for your browser conform to your wishes...You are not being forced to use the cookies...just have your browser block the cookies or delete them after leaving site, whatever works for you....

When I jump to a thread I'm subscribed to by a new comment update link, the new Engineering 360 banner covers the link in the thread to the new comment. That's annoying. Scrolling to reveal the link works but this also happens as one proceeds to each new comment or examing a GA.

Here I jumped to one of my recent GA for a demonstration.

I've discovered one more annoyance. If your browser window is narrower than the page then the left to the right scroll bar on the bottom only moves the main page and not the monochromatic title bar on top. The link button on one end then becomes inaccessible.

I can't help noticing that Cr4 is not in the title bar....only IEEE GlobalSpec and Engineering 360....are we being ghosted? ...there does appear to be a ghostly figure top right.... ....is this a hint? ......or are we doomed to be known forevermore as just "community"...? ...ad infinitum...?

CR4 still creeps in here:

and in the URL (https://cr4.globalspec.com).

You'll also see it if you click on the "ghostly figure top right" .

Note to Admins: I tried to make the cr4 URL a hyperlink, but failed. Has something gone wrong with the ability to post links, of does it perhaps balk at https:// (or indeed at cr4)?
