Gear Whining Noise

10/01/2007 1:27 PM

Hi,

Gear whining noise is encountered in 5th gear of an automobile gearbox..can anyone suggest how to elliminate or reduce this problem. I read some technical papers and they suggest its the transmission error(TE) which is primarily responsible for this problem.

but can Transmission error be reduced in post design stage..? and what are the control factors which effect transmission error.

does crowning effect excess or less be responsible for gear whining?

please suggest....

best regards,

samson.

The most common cause of whining in a car is the wife / girlfirend wanting to go shopping...

If it is not the girlfriend or wife, then go to a good transmission shop, one with a good name and get a replacement transmission with a proper guarantee from them.

Working on transmissions is not for amateur mechanics (no matter HOW good you are with engines etc) and a replacement is cheaper than wrecking it yourself and buying one from scratch!!.....

Good answer Andy.

Although I am an exceptional auto mechanic and I work on very sophisticated equipment at my company. I still will have someone else rebuild an automatic transmission.

Standard tranny's are easy.

Your best off to take Andy's avice on this one.

Make sure there is enough oil in the tranny. The 5th gear is the smallest and more likely to be "above" the oil level. It happened to a friend of mine (4th & 5th gear) and a quart of oil fixed the problem.

Good luck.

Try the similarity to help.

Whining noises in our high pressure 32 bar & high speed boiler furnace oil pumps are normally due to non balanced with motor. The pump shaft coupling need to be balanced with the motor shaft on a lathe. This I learnt after one pump simply "jammed" with excessive whining noise. I had replaced this pump and had not even taken payment. It jammed within 15 minutes of whining. Since I had lost the pump and my money, i had no option but to open the pump part by part then straightened it and then balanced the coupling on a lathe. No whining and happy running since 12 years. good News- Got my payment that very day.
