What Is It? I Haven't a Clue

10/10/2019 5:18 AM

Now I'm retired I go for lots of long walks, and, I've found several of areas of park land in my home town that I was not previously aware of.

The other day I came across this: it's the sort of thing you could easily ignore, but having thought about it, I just can't imagine what it's for?

About fifty to a hundred yards further on were these posts:

Again I'm mystified?

Looks like remains of a play area or obstacle course.

There's a lot of other weird stuff in Hemel Hempstead. This, for instance:

Had he not been a Northener, I'd ponder if Harvey Smith had once set up a practice area. There's a 'v' shape to some of the posts. It's certainly not early installation art by Del, nobody can improve as much as some of his woodcrafting posts here show.

Something very few people have ever interacted with.

Those are exercises stations.

There are probably the remains of a dozen others in the area.

The first is probably for jumping over by horses. The second is the remains of "Woodhenge."

I'm guessing the remains of dog agility training obstacles.

Both groups of (wooden protrusions) are directly in line with relatively nearby clear access routes through nearby trees. It could be the surviving features of a former cross-country running and/or trainning course, no longer conducted by a former school, park, other, organization... I would have loved to be able to train on such a course...

Thanks for all the replies so far.

I just decided to look at the area in google maps satellite view, both objects are clearly visible:-

And the area is labelled: so CSM Engineer takes the dog biscuit.

And there lies your answer. Zoom out a little and you will probably find more, or the remains thereof, in a sequence that completes a circuit (unless the track to the right is the return of the circuit)
A training circuit.

The first are slope comparisons so the civil engineers, you know they are the ones who build targets for the weapons engineers, can tell if the hill is subsiding. That test failed because the comparators sunk along with the hill. They could also be night stalker trippers. Have you seen any night stalkers?

The second set is the result of having too many odd lengths of treated timber left over, and as we know you can't bury them, burn them or otherwise dispose of them but you can stick them into the ground as a talking point. The other possibility is that they were all the same length and the post hole borer just couldn't get the depth right.

Yep, obstacle course. Hurdles for the first pictures. I believe, for the tall posts, the participant is supposed to climb on top the tall first post and walk across the rest of the tall posts.

First My creds: I am the Technical Partner of a large steel Sculpture firm.

Believe it or not and I don't want to; it's a sculpture installation. Seriously somebody put all their creative wherewithal into making it & somebody within the municipal/ county "quality of life" department said yes to installing it. Now in my eyes how much creative wherewithal the artist has and how it improves the "quality of life" is very minimal at best, but "there you go".
