Who manufactures a very small planetary ring roller?

11/01/2007 4:02 PM

Does anyone know of a manufacturer of a small planetary ring roller capable of producing 1" diameter rings? I've searched all over the net, even including hobby stores, and the smallest ring diameter I can find is 2". There are some products advertised as "unlimited ring size range": not true - bought one for my company and it's a piece of junk - won't go that small.

Would appreciate any feedback esp. including manufacturer's name, web address and any (hopefully positive) experiences with the product. Thanks.

unfortunately, some things just don't go small enough! I have had this same problem inthe past. another example is automatic drill sharpeners for drills less than 3 mm....

I have commisioned modellers to copy larger machines to scale e.g a machine for say 3 " copied to 1/6 scale will give you 1/2" product. you do need to work closely with the modeller so you can use the controls etc. Little 12" guage locomotives were often copies of bigger engines, scaled down. problem was the working area for driver and engineer was also scaled down and consequently very cramped and the controls were Funny to use. (you needed to scale down the coal shovel etc to fit the firebox opening... the builder could have just made a bigger opening....)

Hello Guest. just happened by and noticed your comment on sharpening small dia. drills. We use to toss em when they became dull. Drill size: .018 dia Drilled through 1" A-2 & D-2 tool steel.

It sounds like your looking for a ring mandrill which can be plastic or metal. both little more than a sized cone I am sure that you can purchase one that will come with the right size for your needs or perhaps make one from metal stock the size that you require, wrap the stock, cut when it is the size required this allows for rolls of rings to be made.

Ring Rolling is big business in Ball /Roller Bearings industry.

But there they produce a million +/year.

If your need is only a few, may I suggest an alternative-without investments:

  • Get thick Seamless steel pipe turned to~ length you need(ID a few % less). All OD/ID are readily available.
  • Heat the above blanks to forging Temp 700 deg C+ .(maybe over a gas burner/electric furnace
  • Using forging block, taper mandrel, either hammer forge to expand ID+OD both
  • OR holding hot ring outside the taper mandrel---drive mandrel through to size.

But a thus forged ring is difficult to machine!

So let us go back to where we started:'All OD/ID are readily available'

So get the correct size. Then turn ID/OD &Length in 1 setup, This is best.
