Diesel Generator Under the Rain

10/02/2020 3:36 AM

Is it wise to keep a diesel generator ON and keep RUNNING under heavy rainfall without any roof/shield over its top or exhaust ? What is the disadvanatage of this?

Keeping it running might help to blow the rain out of the stack.

It almost certainly depends on the spec. of the particular generator.

Some diesel engines are designed to operate in the rain, some are not designed for this. You will get a better explanation by reviewing the documentation (manual, sales brochure, customer support desk, etc.) from the manufacturer.

Thank you, but not able to lay hands on the manual presently .The generators are Pekin engine, and a Doosan generator separately.

So why stop and wait? Use the telephone to obtain them, for goodness’ sake.

It's the doosan generator that has the features in the video you sent, with that type of cover on the exhaust outlet. The Perkins does not have those features and also the exhaust pipes open vertically to the sky.

That's hardly SolarEagle's problem.

Find the model number of the generator and engine. Then contact Doosan and Perkins about these units. These companies know their products' capabilities and limitations. We at CR4 don't even know the model numbers of these machines nor what you consider to be heavy rainfall.

Diesel trucks usually have a rain flapper.

It will never hurt it running in the rain, it is damaged when it is stopped and there is no cover over the exhaust pipe!
While running the water will be turned to steam and taken out the exhaust as fast as it can come in!

Re: Diesel Generator Under the Rain

There are a number if disadvantages to running generators in the rain unless suitable precautions have been taken to prevent rainfall damage. As mentioned the exhaust is a potential point. Likewise cooling airflow can draw droplets through the alternator windings, brushes, bearings and AVR, potentially causing issues. Electrical switchgear will fail.

The engine electrics are vulnerable and the 12/24v alternator can develop issues along with engine monitoring and control failures. Water ingress to the fuel tank and fuel system will cause delays. Moisture drawn into the engine through the air filter will cause delays. Rust and corrosion of components is anther problem. In short keep her dry unless precautions have been put in place

The generator should have an IP rating. That will tell you whether it's vulnerable to rainfall, running or stopped.

Here's a chart from the internet. The first digit refers to ingress of solid bodies, the second to water penetration. The range goes up to IP68, or IP69 depending on who you ask, but this covers the weatherproof area.

It's a good thing to enter into any internet search engine before hitting the return key.
