Thanksgiving?

11/22/2007 2:28 PM

Today is a major holiday for Americans. "We must re-examine how much stuff we really need - and weigh it against the cost to our family" Socrates.

Happy holidays guys & gals!

Good luck,

James

Think I know where you're coming from - I often feel the same (?) about Christmas over here.

Have thought betimes about telling the family they'll have to sort themselves out, while I go and help with soup kitchens.

Haven't yet had the courage.

Happy Thanksgiving (don't really know what it means, but I know it means a lot to you guys).

I often thought about doing a bit of Charitable type stuff at Christmas, but like yourself have not yet taken the plunge. On of my Sisters did so one year, and said it was a brilliant experience. Emotionally rewarding and fun.

I'll also add a 'Happy Thanksgiving' time to all our American friends. Enjoy.

You really ought to do so, but take the family too. They will all get a lot out of the experience....

I spent a day cleaning floors in the clinic at our down town homeless shelter last year at this time. Pretty gross, but pehaps the most rewarding work I did all last year.

I have been planning to do small repairs for disabled vets. Today, now, will be the time I call or email my intend to the Georgia Veterans Association. Thank you and the others for embarrassing me into action.

Traffic sucks. (Black Friday is the start of the Christmas frenzy, the sales have begun)

Lots of (trustworthy) Aid organisations are now asking for people to buy something useful for a 3rd world family or village, rather than buy more useless junk for themselves.

Last Xmas I was lucky enough to receive cards showing friends had purchased (on my behalf) goats, writing materials, medicines, water bottles etc. that will help someone who actually needs it, rather than giving me more useless ties, socks or bottles of sambucca.

Happy thanksgiving to our Yankie friends. ffeJ

Yes. On Thanksgiving families come together and give thanks for all our blessings.

It is a quite, simple time. This is what our ancestors from England did after colonizing

America.

That means europe has this day as well.

From books I was learned that the day is as important as Chrismas. and all members of family get together. something a bit like our midautown festival.

next moonth will be your chrismas. and new year is coming soon.

I don't know about the rest of Europe, but in the UK we have Thanksgiving Sunday church services, but no celebrations.

My ex. is ½ American (born VA, moved to UK when very young). Her parents (Scots Dad, Mum from US) are over here, but they don't celebrate it either.

You struck gold there with your ex ! Don't the Scots make a big thing about 'Burns night' and 'Hogmannnay*' as well ?

* I have no idea of the spelling or meaning of this, but it does sound like a good party day from what I've heard. Why don't we English have a 'Shakespeare night' and all dine on lumpy custard and warm beer.

Re: Thanksgiving?

I have a bit of a conflict with Thanksgiving. Some of my ancestors followed the original English settlers and were very thankful for the success of that early venture. Another group of my ancestors were here before the arrival of the English, and they subesquently have had little to be thankful for. So, I just eat turkey and pumpkin pie, and try not to think too hard about the reason...

Happy Thanksgiving. I share (sort of) the same ancestral background as you mention, being that I have English, Irish and American Indian ancestors. However, I also relate to the fact that we have to much stuff in the US. In fact, I have recently heard it said that the largest growth area in the US commerce is storage building rental properties. That should say something about us as a nation. This is one of the reasons I made the effort to give back to society and charities after I retired. But, unfortunately I am a wee bit cynical about the motives of most NGOs, so I spend my time (and money) to be involved at the volunteer level as much as I can. Sending money can be useful, but giving your time (and engineering/scientific talents) as well as paying your own way is much more useful and you get to see the fruits of your efforts.
