I want to design a wheelchair which could run on Indian roads with out manual hand effort. Tell me how to design an engine for this purpose.

Are there anything special about Indian roads that should be considered?

Rural / urban roads?

There are and should be a number of motorized wheelchairs available. A Friend of mine on a farm has a 3 wheeler that can be used on the road (short distances at least).

Does manual effort include driving? (steering ,speed ).

Different engines can be obtained of the shelve. Anything wrong with them?

A 4-wheel drive with limited slip differential will require more power than simple 2-wheel drive, as will chunky tyres.

Are you thinking electric or small petrol engine?

Electric is simple cleaner, safer? But batteries are heavy.

I thought there were plent of small three wheeled, scooter based, vehicles in India. wouldn't it be easier to modify one of these? Or does the wheelchair have to be an 'indoor' chair too?

Is it to be manufactured locally by craftsmen or commercially in a factory....for rural use or city use?

What are the priorities? Cost? reliability? repairability? Running cost? weight?

Interesting project...you will plenty of help, but you need to give us a fuller specification.

I have been designing manual and power wheelchairs for 20 years, and would like to help out. As Del stated, we need your specifications to get started, or to offer advice.
There are a variety of off the shelf direct drive gearboxes and motors, Controllers and joysticks, drive wheels, casters, batteries, and seating systems available. The frame design would be specific to your use, and available materials. Cabling can be a challenge, but I'm sure there are a number of engineers that can help out with that.

Please have a look at the all terrain wheel chair models of Ostrich Mobility instruments , Bangalore. Visit www.ostrichmobility.com

This is the only wheel chair that can handle the terrains effectively
