Automatic Vaccum Testing Pot Needed

11/28/2007 6:41 AM

My name is Wayne Burgess (Budgie) and employed by GSK a pharmaceutical Co. In one of our Depts,we do a hot powder drink for colds and flu, which is packed in a 5,6g sachet packet. My question to the panel is: We need a fully automatic vacuum testing pot (or pressure pot) that will test the sachet packet for leaks, seal strength. At present we test in a pressure pot, half filled with water the sachet placed on top of the water, the lid closed then pressurized at 100kpa for 5mins. After, the the person standing and timing the 5mins will then cut the sachet with a pair of scissors and visually inspect the seals.

This a lenghthy process! is there some product that we can put the sachet in an apparatus press a button and walk away, with a result given after 5mins printed out for record keeping.

Your answer will be greatly appreciated.

Hi, that's not GSK in Harlow England is it? I work in a small company just across the road from a BIG GSK complex!

If you put it in a V small chamber and pumped it down (wouldn't need to be a very hard vacuum) and left it for a few sends would that do it? Would it be obvious that the seal was intact? E.G Presumably the sachet would be flat and deflated?

Hi, Budgie,

Don't know of anything off-the-shelf (someone else here may), but maybe folk here could hash out a few ideas for a design - you'd then have to find someone (you'd have to pay!) to do the detailed design & make it. (Sorry, I'm out of that - I'm at full capacity for the next 6 - 8 months).

Why not register & come back - we'll see what can be done?

Can the visual inspection be replaced by a mechanical inspection?

For example: Loss or gain of weight. Material on filter. Absorbing of light etc.

What you need is called a bombing station. In this technique, the part is pressurized with helium or a mixture of helium and air, and tested by one of the following methods:Measuring Leaks To determine the total quantity of leakage (but not the numberor location of leaks), the part is pressurized with helium(or a mixture of helium and air or nitrogen). This can be doneby bombing or backfilling small hermetically sealed parts.Larger parts can be actively pressurized using a hose or tubingto deliver the helium. The part is placed in a volume that isthen evacuated by the leak detector. All the helium escaping from the part is captured and quantified.

Rather than type this, I admit i lifted it from the Varian catalog. Go here...
