Center of gravity too high

03/06/2022 9:41 AM

Has anyone ever experienced too many chiefs, and not enough workers?

I have.

There was once a local textile manufacturing plant that was running at a very high profit, and there was one man running the entire management tasks.

He had started as floor sweeper, and knew all of the processes from input to output. He could immediately tell the origin of a defect, and the specific step in the process that caused it and initiate appropriate corrections.

When he retired,he was replaced with a recent graduate. The new hire had to have an assistant to manage all of the information coming in,to summarize and present his synopsis to the manager.Eventually, the assistant, being overwhelmed by his duties, had to hire an assistant to assist him.

Eventually, the company had to build 96 more offices to accommodate all of the assistants and their subordinates.

The result was in less than 5 years, the company went bankrupt.

An upside down pyramid will eventually topple.

Reminds me of when NASA lost a Mars explorer because the distance to ground was not converted to metric from English or visa-versa units of measure.

I suspect this happens often when the chiefs are related...

I recently experience where too many chiefs are involved… what I later realized, is that they had a number of projects that didn’t perform well. and being directors that pride themselves at working at a high level… which is nothing but generalizations… the losses occurred at the detail level.

well, when things hit the fan, they would do anything to make the bs stick elsewhere, from creating misdirection, stymie communications to launder and fluff data to bold face lying.

The thing to do, management gurus say, is to train someone to replace you so that when you go, that someone can take over without falling on his face.

This piece of advice fell apart once when the president of one company was grooming one of his vice presidents to replace him. Then, when said VP learned everything, he went and joined the competition.

Still and all, sharing of skills and information is essential in any company. We were required to write everything down so that when needed, the information was on file.

This, however, runs counter to some people's fear that if he shares what he knows, his status is jeopardized. So, he keeps everything to himself and the company runs smoothly, until he leaves.

In the OP, I don't know if there was someone else who was above the manager. If there was, he is to blame for letting the situation continue. (",)

regards,

Vulcan

There is a difficult to manage but very important difference between running a company for the long haul and having everyone in the executive conference room happy during today's meeting.

Today's compensation and tomorrow's profits are often independent of each other. Managers move from company to company every few years and the companies balance sheet starts to look like a script for "Raiders of the Corporate Ark".

The difference of short term profits… where companies would bring in highly paid executives that would sell profitable business units off within the company that created profits in the short term, collect their ungodly bonuses, and then leave the company where they only the only thing left in the company was their unprofitable business units remaining and the board wondering why they can’t make money.

This was to a degree and IMO the deconstruction of manufacturing in this country back in the 70’s.
