Trouble With R45 Connectors

04/11/2022 10:05 PM

I've connected RJ45 connectors to both ends of a cat5 cable, but when I test it on my laptop, there is no ethernet connection. I also have a working pre-made ethernet wire, so I know it's my own. I cut the cat5 to 12.5mm and join both ends with the same type of connection (i.e. s68A). I've tried it several times now with the same result: it doesn't work. I could test for continuity using a piece of twine and earth at both ends, but how do I test for continuity with an RJ45 connector?

The following are the difficulties that I'm aware of, but I'm not sure which is the most likely or if there are any others that I'm missing.

1. Poor quality connectors, not actually making contact with the laptop or router.

2. cat 5 not actually terminated inside the RJ45 connector

3. RJ45 Crimping tool not effective which leads to 2 above.

Cheers, all.

You may have poor-quality connectors and/or crimping tools. Outside of that possibility, you might be applying the incorrect type of wiring pattern.

Use a "soft clamp" to hold the two ends next to each other:-

Then use a multimeter to check for continuity between the visible contacts:-

1 - 1

2 - 2

3 - 3

6 - 6

Most ethernet links only use pairs 1 and 2

568B is more common (here) than 568A

You may need to "tie" sewing needles to the ends of the probes with copper wire to get access to the contacts. I have tiny "pogo nails" from in circuit test fixtures permanently fitted to my multimeter probes.

Small paper clips can also be an asset here.

On your list of problems you forgot low quality or counterfeit cat5 cable.

I once accidently purchased what looked good but turned out to be copper plated steel wire. I was perplexed for a while because the continuity from my cat5 rj45 tester showed it was good. I made a 3 foot patch cable and it worked but a 10 foot one didn't.

I use a Southwire cable tester. You have (2) pieces one connect on each end, It’ll tell you which wire you have a problem with.

I love the Platinum Tools EZ-RJ45 connectors. During initial assembly the wires are run all the way through the connector. This both speeds up assembly and gets rid of the problem of the wire not being in far enough to make a good connection. Wires are then trimmed to length after crimping.
