Nuisance trippings

10/05/2022 1:10 PM

We are having many nuisance trippings in our cement plant leading to bad performance of operations. Many times we are not able to get the correct reason. Please explain certain guide lines to minimise the problem of this miscellaneous nuisance trippings. And also please specify whether any specific checks to find out the reasons for trippings.

Best Regards,

You need to monitor the amp draw and voltage levels on a recording device....this will tell you if the problem is one of supply voltage or an equipment problem...like a weak breaker or bad component...

It would be of value to us to know exactly how you know they are nuisance trips, and exactly what is tripping, and if there are any common events associated with these events.

This can be a common problem in manufacturing plants, especially processing conductive and corrosive materials. It is required to deeply investigate each occurrence until you determine the root cause, and apply those learnings to the next incident. The first investigation will require significant investment in diagnostic equipment and time, but the tools you use will make solutions come faster & easier as you progress.

There is at least one reason and often more to explain each of these trips, and it is not random. Otherwise, a business would never survive.

Also, this question does not appear to be classed as instrumentation, unless there is a significant translation error.

Instrumentation can source signals to alarm circuits that can trip motors; all those field devices and instruments on the I side of I/O.

True, but based on information provided so far, I’d wager that the investigation has not progressed farther than ‘1. The device has tripped’. Circuit breaker, motor, fire alarm signal, steam turbine stop valve, boiler master fuel, flame failure, (among many) might all be candidates for an unclarified ‘tripped’ description. Since motors with magnetic starters or inverter drives are the most common uninstrumented devices in a manufacturing plant, we’re going with that...

It’s time to gather data. What tripped because of what, at what time of day and on what date. Plot those events on the plan drawing of the plant and on the power distribution drawings. Over time, a pattern will emerge that enables a sharper focus on the cause. Then it can be fixed.

Delegate it. This is the ideal task for a freshly-qualified Electrical Engineer.

Do let this forum know the outcome.

There is not much information to go on. Troubleshooting is an activity that involves analysis, performance of tests, and more analysis. Patterns in timing and frequency, need to be found.
Just a guess, many nuisance trips seems to imply that the systems and equipment are running beyond their capacities. Did your factory increase its production rates? If such improvements are done haphazardly, motors, rotating equipment, etc. may be operating at or near their limits. It would only be natural to start having multiple equipment shutting down in seemingly random moments.
I don't think a forum would be a good source of information. We will need diagrams, specifications, past and present operating parameters, etc. What you need are experienced people who are onsite and know how to troubleshoot.

regards,

Vulcan
