Shipping Container Sized SS Housing

World's tallest skyscraper to be built with ready-made 'Meccano' pieces

It makes sense to me. We're running out of construction grade sand anyway.

Building a taller skyscraper isn't adding another story on top, it's adding a story to the bottom that can support the weight of the rest of the stories.

It’s not only the weight, it needs to handle the ‘wind load’.

And to think the people (registered engineers) that sign off on those drawings have such a huge responsibility to the occupants/tenants of the building and everyone around the building.

Not a job for the faint of heart.

It unbelievable what engineers were able to do with a pencil and paper… or even a slide rule. Gustave Eiffel Comes to mind…

I had engineers that would say, in college we had computer programs that do that… but they can’t do it themselves…

I’ll remind them that have monkeys that go into space,… but they’re still monkeys. Which is basically the same thing,

Naval architects have similar responsibilities. Cruise ships of course impact a much larger group of people than the typical crew on a tanker or container ship.

I've never been on one. Not really my idea of a vacation. Though I might consider one of those "small" cruise ships that are much lower key. Yep, I'm not getting old. I am old.

Yep. I would like to know there is a peer-reviewed structural analysis of the strength and deflection of the complete structure.

It was never built. As was said at the time (2012) "There is also speculation that it is a marketing ploy rather than an actual project". The idea was to raise the profile (sorry, unintended pun) of the company that made prefabricated building segments.

Yes: from near the beginning of the article:-

"...with a completion date set for March 2013."

I still would like to see evidence that there was a peer-reviewed analysis done. If someone answered this, I couldn't see it because somehow I was blocked. Maybe I'm back on, but there is no evidence yet!

I don't think it ever got much beyond the architect's sketch pad.

There’s a huge difference between an architect and a structural engineer…

it seems structural engineers tend to always rain on the architects parade… so to speak.

Yet, some things manage to succeed. Sydney Opera House, Elon Musk's glass house, . . . .

It must be quite the collaboration though.

Well,… I did say structural engineers may rain on the architect parade… I didn’t say the parade was canceled…

I have seen too many architect proposals that have never happened, because they were more elaborate & fanciful than needed, thus cost more and the user refused.

Careful, we have some very hyper-sensitive members here where their feelings where hurt… that will be set off for the most obscure reason… that no one else would care able.

sometimes one feels like you have Parkinson’s and your trying to put a pin back into a live grenade.
