Nuclear Power Plant: Power consumed by plant instruments

12/11/2007 5:38 PM

How much power is consumed by all of the instrumentation at a large nuclear power plant? A good rough estimate is OK. Data for a BWR preferred, but PWR data is also welcome.

If possible, please break it out into the power consumption by the instrumentation in the reactor building and the power consumption by the instrumentation in the balance of plant.

This request is for instrument power consumption only. This includes the power consumed by systems such as the Rod Control & Instrumentation System, the Reactor Protection System, the Recirculation Flow Control System, the Feedwater Flow Control System, the Radiation Monitoring System, the plant annunciator system, remote instruments, neutron monitoring system, process computer, etc.

A rough estimate> Between 2000 and 10000KWhr or as much as a small town bakery.

Ronald:

You note energy consumed in KWhr. Is that over a year for 100% availability? If so, I would need to divide the number by 8760 hours in a year to get the average power in KW.

However, when I do that, it comes out as a very small number, on the order of 1 KW.

Thank you for your assistance.

Assuming these apparatus are working 24 hrs per day or 'round the clock; then it's per hour!

Ronald:

OK, so the power level is 200 KW to 10 MW.

That is a 5 to 1 range. Can we narrow it down any further to a 2 to 1 range, for example?

Regards,

Ed

Let's not complicate things! You asked for a rough estimate; I gave you one. Based on my past years ( 1973-1996) as an instrument technician I would observe that many electronic instruments (1-5 vdc, 10-50mv, 4-40ma, etc) were rated at between .2 and 10 wphr. An industry lke Schering Pharmaceuticals in Manati, PR had over 10,000 instruments as per the last inventory while conducting a validation remediation readiness and Due Diligence for GxP. Nuclear power plants are not that different except for the, maybe, complex instruments used.

OK, fair enough. If I were living in Puerto Rico, I would be sipping cold ones on the beach this December and not concerning myself with any power estimates! Amigo, I wish I were there with you.

Muchas gracias y Feliz Navidad.

It's been raining cats and dogs for about 2 weeks. Tropical storm "G" has pounded the island and my roof s leaking. Sorry, did not mean to be harsh. Come on down or up some day. Will have 2 margaritas waiting!

Never having worked at a nuclear power plant, I am not qualified to give you a figure. I am, however, curious as to how you can ask such a question.

I've installed instruments for more than two decades and we do our load calculations based on the instruments we intend to install. From your post, it seems that you don't have a list of instruments or details yet.

Instrumentation differs from plant to plant, in brand, type as well as in quantity. Some instruments consume more power than others even if they are for the same purpose. I would think that you can figure out the answer yourself by obtaining the max power consumption of each instrument you intent to install and work from there.

Well, you have 130% tabulated, and it is 130% of what number (KW)?

Objective is an economic analysis and value of lower power technologies.

Making an attempt to get the info quickly from someone who knows through this forum. It has worked in the past! Have contacted utilities, but numbers are not consistent.
