Fun Quiz

12/30/2007 6:39 AM

At this time of year much of the UK media engages in silly quiz's. There is one set by The Times (29th December) that is available on-line here ; www.qi.com/eqiuz

Members might like to spend a few moments testing their search skills. It all ends with three tie-breaker questions, so I'm quite happy to share any answers I can come up with. I'm not going to reproduces the 18 Questions, but so far my answers are;

3 - Enchinacea

4 - Earwig

5 - England's

7 - Edison

10 - Chartres

11 - Englebert

13 - Elephant

15 - Eritrea

17 - Eton

Anyone interested in wasting a few minutes post here ! The tie-breaker questions give real scope for triviality. It's possible to check answers with the quiz hosts web-site, though I haven't done so yet. Seeing who can research best is fun enough for me.

Re: Fun Quiz

It wiil work guys, they must be busy. Try putting "QI annual quiz" direct to your browser.

I have now determined that all answers seem to begin with 'E'

9- Eighteen

2 - Elephants

Heck I'll crack this on my own soon. At least we can argue about the tie-breakers.

So far I'm missing 1,6,8,10,16,18. I haven't checked all yet but at least one is dodgy. I'll summarize when others have had a bash. Meantime tie-breaker 19 is " Tell us something interesting about Easington, County Durham" ! WHAT !! Apart from mining trivia, that's going to be hard. Saying I once went out with a girl from nearby won't impress them.

<groan>. I reckon it's a cathedral that begins with E, but haven't checked yet. If only somebody literate like ER was about we could crack question 1.

OK you nailed that one John ! Excellent.

One web-check said that "Korvalappu" was Finnish for Walkman, but that doesn't fit the E pattern. I have to go very soon, but keep on checking. I'm trying to think of spherical objects connected with a river ye ( electron ? surely not). I'll check back later , and hope our resident cat has found the link !

So do I check for 'earmuff' or 'earbag' ! It's great fun to check this stuff on-line as you can keep re-trying. I'm currently on about 10/18, and haven't even got around to the tie-breakers yet.

I'd go with earmuff since only one is an earbag. However, with your luck they'll want earwarmer!

According to Websters on-line translation dictionary, lappu is Finnish for: bit, label, pad, patch, piece, shred and slip.

So I'd go for Earpiece

Re: Fun Quiz

Update : No 16 answer is "eggs" (we eat 173 each in 2006).

If anyone is getting frustrated because they can't access the quiz say so and I'll post it all.

Somebody please explain the missing questions then we can argue about the 3 tie-breakers !

For those who don't want to check a link ;" No 8 : Which spherical object owes its name to the Ye river ?" For those who check , the picture of an eye is not 'Elephant'.

We have until April 8th to solve this ! More than half way there -we can do it people.

8. Edam cheese, originally a spherical object, owes its name the damming of the Ye river Yedam, which became Edam, in Holland.

#1. Epitasis, meaning "stretching out or intensifying," is derived from the Greek word of the same name (though epi means "upon" and teinein means "to stretch"), and is that part of a classic Greek play where the plot thickens or intensifies.

Hey folks,we are so close ;

1 - Epitasis

2 - Elephants

3 - Enchinacea

4 - Earwigs

5 - England's

6 - Ethelred

7 - Edison

8 - Edam

9 - Eighteen

10 - Ear

11 - Englebert

12 - E

13 - Einstein

14 - Erin

15 - Eritrea

16 - Eggs

17 - Eton

18 - ???????

It sounds like its going to be ear 'something' but I'm not sure what yet. I didn't try pluralizing any of the options.

Congratulations to all on your collective knowledge ! Anybody care to take a punt on the last 3 tie-breakers ?

19 Tell us something quite interesting about Easington, County Durham

20 Tell us something quite interesting about eagles

21 Tell us something quite interesting about e-mails

Feel free to use answers up to 18 and enter the silly competition, or post fun trivia on the last 3 questions here. It's just an end of year giggle, though I have no idea why the entry deadline is April 8th. CR4's collective minds seem to have smashed this one easily (apart from some minor work need on Q 18)

Nice one Chazl ! As far as I know there is no internet site where anybody has got all the answers yet. CR4's collective brain did it within about 24 hours - not bad considering the number of minutes each person has spent looking at this. In a live TV quiz I think we could assemble a world beating team.

I've yet to come up with any good answers for the last 3 questions, but will report back with anything good that comes to mind.

Congratulations all round, and a very happy New year to you all. In Oz they are probably about 3 hours away from it. Wherever you all are, I hope 2008 will be a good one for you, and as the Vulcan's say, "Live long and prosper".

Q 22 - Tell us something quite interesting, like where is the best site on the internet.

Anybody who doesn't know the answer must go hide in shame !

Pit disasters are ten a penny, but I like the Billy Elliot one - I know it was 'oop' North, but was it Easington ? Oh yeah, I just checked. You is right. Even it's twin isn't interesting. Oh no this is a tough one. It's not far from a town called Pity Me, which is sort of funny, even if disconnected. If only we had towns like America !

(It's not yet new year so I don't feel beholden to my pledge to try and stay 'on-topic' ) I'm, guessing they mean social intercourse, aka discussion. Perhaps two rivers met there ? It could be a race track thing ?

Maybe it will all just slip into the sea and the question will be null.

"If only we had towns like America!"

Oh, you don't know the half of it - some of the better ones are far too small to show up on any map you're likely to have access to. Hamlets like Hardscrabble, Missouri, and YeeHaw Junction, Florida are pearls beyond price! Also, there's a Beaver Crossing, Nebraska, and his little legs are getting mighty tired...

In England we have a lot of villages that end with the name ______Bottom. I really don't know what to make of that ! Whether it's cause, or result of Brit Toilet humour I don't know. There are certainly some odd place names around the world. In the spirit of this thread, does anybody else know of slightly 'odd' place names ? I just don't believe this one:(Turn your kids away before looking) Here. That has got to be some kind of bad joke - I just don't believe it ! Don't shoot me CR4, I'm only the messenger.

Hey, I been up that lift ! Didn't they drop one a short while back ? The mechanism where it turns around at each end is brilliant. For those who don't know, the cars detach from the main cable by a canny clutch mechanism and pass around a slower moving spool so people have time to get on/off. One time I went up there, there was a real good snow blizzard going on - mega good fun ! I kept on getting these urges as I thought of the film "Where Eagles Dare". How the heck did you get me back on topic ?

Ummm - I feel like I was just duped into something - I watched the video at the "more fun" link. All I can say is if you aren't into mountain biking, watching paint dry has more entertainment value, and if you ARE into it, you'd be out DOING it, not sitting watching some other rotters getting their kicks. That said, just how is "Ae" pronounced, anyway? Just like it looks like it should sound?

A nick-name for Washington, DC is "Foggy Bottom" - refers to the fact it was built on lowland, or bottomland, which is a term used for rich farmland on river and lake margins. I suspect that's the source of British bottoms, too - er... that didn't come out just right, did it?

I've only ever been through it - always in a rush to see some of the great coast they have oop North. A mate is currently working in the area so I may get a chance to visit sometime this year. They have some great delicacies up there, like stotties. Yum yum yum.

No John, we have all 18 ! I checked each individually. Maybe I mis-spelt some in my listing (?) but we definately have the lot. Watch for the pluralizations on some, earwigs etc. Start at Q1 check it, then add Q2 check it etc.

Now what the heck do we do about the Easington problem ! The locals will have an unfair advantage. I've long since lost contact with the girl I mentioned dating from up there. Off the top of my head all I know is that they once had a big colliery under the sea. I'd have to go google ga-ga to find a good response for that one.

With eagles I was thinking along the lines of hunting eagles, or those French flags as depicted in the TV series "Sharpe". For e-mails it's got to boil down to statistics or the origins of the phrase. I'm going to have to phone a few trivial friends on these 3. Maybe I should take 50:50, or should I ask the audience ? Sorry folks - it's a Brit joke. Where is that Stinky Pete when you need somebody to cough !

Here is the only thing I found that would constitute being interesting about Easington.

Castle Eden Dene is of particular note for the fame of its natural beauty and also being the home of the rare Angus Butterfly.

How 'bout this:

Easington is the only place on earth with dolomitic limestone cliffs on the coastline.

If that isn't "something interesting", I don't know what is!

Or, in keeping with the "E" theme, this:

The first documentary evidence of Easington was in 900 to 915 when Ealfred, son of Britulfine came fleeing the Vikings and sought the mercy of Bishop Cutheard who granted him the lands of Easington and surrounding townships.

This Easington Village is one happenin' place, I'm tellin' ya!

I've just learnt that there's a pub called "The Easington" in Bloxham Rd., Banbury, Oxon.

Don't yet know anything about it - or how it came by the name. I'll try to get some more on it.

There may be potential here for the e-mail question.

Going OT, I still say charge money for each e-mail. It would cut the crap, and money raised could be used for some useful purpose. Think about how much spam you get sent (and hopefully deflect) and all the crappy stuff that leaves you thinking " Why the **** am I reading this". It's just too easy for bosses etc to e-mail every poor sod who has better things to do. I seem to spend half my life looking at such e-mail thinking "why the heck are you telling me this". Verbal diarrhoea has gone digital. I'm well placed to say so.. If it's informative, fine. If it makes me laugh, fine. 90 % is a waste of space. OMG I'm going into rant mode ! I'll step outside and do the decent thing. < BANG>

Re: Fun Quiz

A couple eagle facts:

Largest eagle nest discovered was over 1 ton (2000 lbs) called The eyrie.

While there was some conflict over 'turkey' and 'bald eagle' for being the National Bird of America. Benjamin Franklin voted out 'bald eagle' for being cowardly and considered it a thief.

An eagle's beak and talons grow continuously, because they are made of keratin, the same substance as our hair and fingernails. Eagles molt in patches, taking almost half a year to replace feathers, starting with the head and working downward. Not all feathers are replaced in a given molt. An eagle without feathers, talons, and a beak would die of starvation and exposure.

Eagles also are more scavenger than hunter. They are Known for defecating on other than a Eagles fresh kill rendering it into trash for any one else. Very nasty. When they get old they look like a patch work quilt of brown and white.

Hunting a Turkey is tricky.

But the Eagle fits the Politicians better.

Except for the fact that it goes against the grain for ME certainly, and you obviously from your posts here, I'd ask you to whip out some ID to prove that 18 status... But I must say, if true (and there's no real reason for doubt!), then there IS hope for the future... BTW, I added the pic that I did because at 18, that gent also had 28 years worth of experience.

I doubt it - our turnpike tolls are serious inputs to the gov't budget... Serious enough they put up CCTV cameras to capture an image of scofflaws that run the gates w/o paying (they go thru the "Pike Pass" lane - thats an RFID device that automatically bills your account - with no PP on board). And it's not all that expensive! If you pay as you go, it's 75¢ to $1.25 (I think thats about £1/4 - £1/2 range) every 5-10 miles (approx. 9-18 km). Original point was, divvied up, we'd each get chump change...

We have to wait a few months and see. Anybody who uses the guff on this thread and wins should feel honour bound to share. By the time they've paid for everyones air-ticket to a selected bar, they're gonna be seriously out of pocket from a pathetic £1000 prize. Tell ya what, if I win I'll tell you all about the seriously bad night out I have. Oh don't worry, odds are about a million to one. If by any miracle I do win, I'll send a crate of booze to Chris Leonard and the rest of the admin team. There should be enough change after postage for me to enjoy a bottle of vinegar.

Mentioning vinegar - did you catch the astonishing Vinegar Thread?

Not many posts yet - I'm still left speechless - but I'm sure there's a lot of scope there for the advancement of human knowledge. Share an idea or two.

Thanks for the tip off john, I'm going to visit that one ! Sparky gave a great answer at #1. I've also concluded that I am not quite as mad as I thought !

Majority, schmajority - sanity is much over-rated. Of all the things I've ever lost, I think I miss my mind the least.

And I, for one, certainly don't mind a little madness - it's all that's kept me sane for all these years... "Alas, poor Yorick. I knew him, Horatio."
